Chicago May 18 A wave of price cutting in ready to wear clothing from the Mississippi valley to the Pacific coast is reported with discounts from 15 to 50 percent. Merchants cite temporary demand, delivery delays, and inventory goals as drivers while several firms run “no profit” or underselling campaigns across cities including Topeka St Louis Seattle San Francisco Omaha Oklahoma City San Antonio Port Smith Pine Bluffs and Texarkana with 20 to 70 percent cuts noted in various departments and goods.
May 18 report states undergraduates who served in the army form coercion squads overseeing student registration. Applicants must gain five endorsements, driving enrollments down from 12,530 in 1918 to about 2,600.

An unmarked hole in the Salt River near Phoenix claimed the life of 14 year old Mary Juge as her family posed for a river picture. Her mother and grandmother narrowly escaped drowning after being carried under water for minutes. A coroner ordered warnings placed at the site.
