Hourly armies of opposing forces creep closer as a major battle looms near. The clash could determine control of key fronts and shift regional power. Officials warn of intensified fighting and possible casualties as operations intensify.
Orozco arranges to receive an attack from enemy forces in his strongly entrenched positions at Escalon and Rellano. The report notes federal plans to strike the rebel rear areas.
From Ceballos five miles south of Escalon General Huerta telegraphed the Mexican consulate that he would engage the rebels tomorrow. Federals found scores of electrical mines during the advance and sighted the enemy near sundown. The move puts the federates within firing range of the rebels.
El Paso reports a decisive phase as rebels hold Escalon and Bellans while federal columns press along the Mexican Central railroad. Forces estimate 10 000 to 16 000 as both sides maneuver to isolate key cities and threaten a major engagement likely the next day.
At Rebel Front Escalon Mexico May 18 insurrectos say they are ready to repel any federal advance. General Salazar commands south of Bellano with Campa Fernandez and Alatorre directing 2000 behind the advance guard. Federals probe near Zavalza nine miles south as Huerta may push northward tomorrow.

Morning Journal reports Arizona lawmakers, in session past midnight May 16, debated a general election. Both houses balked at holding an election next November with votes 17 16 in the house and 10 7 in the senate opposing. Officials will serve until January 1, 1915 unless the governor calls an election. A second brief item notes two light earthquake shocks at Guadalajara Mexico with little damage.
Attorney General Wickersham asks a federal court to declare the Brazilian valorization plan unlawful under the Sherman act. A receiver would sell 960,000 bags valued at $16 million held by New York Dock Company, and a temporary injunction would prevent disposal of coffee in America. Defendants include Herman Sielcken, Baron Bruno Schroeder, Eduardo Barge, Levi Comte de Tourches, Dr Paulo de Silva Prado, Theodore Wille, Societe Generale, and New York Dock Company.
A solid trainload of coal from the Primero mine was shipped to San Francisco for a navy trial. If satisfactory, New Mexico coal may be widely used in government service. The shipment came from Jansep, the Primero Coal Company's shipping point, and Nueva Mexico’s coal interests are hopeful.
Petitions publicized in Seattle on May 18 call for the recall of Mayor George F. Cotterrill elected last winter. The core charge is failure to protect citizens enforcing respect for the American flag.
James D Porter a former Tennessee governor and diplomat died tonight in Paris Tennessee at age 64. Porter served as United States minister to Chile and as assistant secretary of state under President Cleveland, leaving a long record of public service.

He claimed to hold the balance of power for delegates to the Republican national convention and said neither Taft nor Roosevelt can win. In Jacksonville on May 18 twenty delegates from across Florida formed the main body of the Republican party and named six delegates to back Theodore Roosevelt at the national convention with the pledge first last and always. They held two district conventions and instructed for Roosevelt, contesting seats with the Taft regulars at Palatka in February.
Anti Taft Republican conventions were held today in all twelve Georgia congressional districts to name delegates for Chicago who would contest seating of delegates elected by the regulars. In every district the delegates were instructed to vote for Roosevelt.
In Yoakum Texas on May 18 Roosevelt adherents from the Ninth Texas district held a convention and elected D M Haller and Fritz Korth as delegates to the Republican national convention. They instructed for Roosevelt and will contest the Taft delegation seated earlier.
Washington May 18 The house adjourned after failing to complete the Panama canal administration bill. Debate was vigorous, especially on toll provisions, delaying progress and likely postponing resumed consideration until Tuesday.
The House passed a measure to amend national banking laws, granting the money trust committee inquisition powers over banks, and sent it to the Senate. Prolonged debate and numerous amendments blocked action on the Panama Canal government bill. Adjourned at 6 18 p m until 11 a m Monday.
In Rock Springs Wyoming on May 18 a circus ticket wagon was held up and robbed of 1700 dollars. The robbers fled into the mountains after the show began and a mounted posse pursued them. Authorities suspect the Whitney brothers were involved and were hiding nearby.
The Montes line steamship Santana was seized in New Orleans harbor by the revenue cutter Davey for transporting arms to Mexico. On board were 110000 pounds of rifle ammunition and ten cases of carbines. Authorities detain the ship pending Washington instructions while noting the consular bills of lading and the British-flagged vessel’s arrival from Progreso with brokers and Mexican consul involvement.
A Morning Journal Special Leased Wire report from Los Angeles on May 18 states H Moore and Marcus W Robins lawyers for Industrial Workers of the World leaders in San Diego report they face mob death threats as they plan to appear in court May 20. They urge Governor Johnson and authorities to protect courts and lawyers amid calls for intervention.
President Taft travels nearly three thousand miles through his home state visiting seventy three counties and speaking to crowds as part of the Ohio campaign. He aims to secure a victory in the state Tuesday.
