An official order declares a strike by members of the Brotherhood of Railway Freight Clerks on the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad. The action starts at 2 p m tomorrow and affects freight clerks in New Haven and surrounding lines.
Envoys of the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage concluded a 10,000 mile, 38 day tour with a capitol rotunda rally urging passage of the Susan B Anthony amendment. Delegates met representatives and senators, marched to the Capitol, and presented a 150 pound iced cake for President Wilson.
Congressman Frank Buchanan and other defendants charged with conspiring to violate Sherman anti trust law by inciting strikes among munition workers will receive an early federal trial. Government officials announced late today after meetings with U S District Attorney Muarella and Assistant Raymond Sarfaty, with Judge J A Deland and former US Attorney John Lora Y Brien handling the case. The trial date was postponed to the fall amid anticipated indictments if current motions fail.
A band believed Mexican stole ten horses from Poole's ranch near Shafter, Texas on the prior Sunday night. Texas rangers traced the trail north toward the river and likely into Mexico east of Presidio. a Fourteenth Cavalry detachment joined the search to intercept or follow across the border. Gen Jose Salazar a former Oresteo chief who fled El Paso last weeks led a three man group to the Santo Domingo ranch thirty miles east of Ojo Caliente Chihuahua. They seized flour bags and fled into the hills amid claims the Salazaristas included a one eyed man a cripple and a deaf one. Mexican sources say Balugor offered terms to Gutierrez for surrender.
Nine companies of sixty five men each and a battery of artillery form the initial New Mexico National Guard unit to be mustered into U S service. Physical exams completed. Columbus to front truck service active. Rumors say Villa recruiting anew in Durango as Pershing reports no cavalry pursuit of the Villista band near El Rubio.
London May 16 Conscientious objectors whose military service objections were overruled by tribunals face harsh penalties. A score of objectors from Rhyl Wales were sent to various prisons with two years hard labor for court martial refusals to obey orders. Some refused khaki shaving and all refused to die. Parliament discussed military service bills with calls for fair treatment, noting no death penalty under court martial for refusals.
Washington May 16 The administration bill was taken up in committee today with debate turning to the gag rule issue. Republicans accused Democrats of preventing action while Democrats defended the rule as needed to expedite a major national measure. Majority Leader Kitchin urged united action to pass the bill and keep the quorum, aiming to finish appropriation bills and adjourn by July 20.
