A wreck on the rail near Opukane injures a dozen travelers as bandits loot mail and express cars. Coaches crash into stalled passenger cars, causing multiple injuries and chaos. Authorities hunt suspects and assess damages.
A Great Northern passenger train was hijacked near Colbert and Meade on Nov 3. Bandits rifled the registered mail, forced crew from the engine, and sent the locomotive and car down the track at high speed. Twelve injured, one mail clerk Benjamin F. Stump described. Suspects two to three men tall as 6 ft and 5 ft 11 in. rewards and pursuit launched from Spokane and Hilliard with dozens of shots fired. N. Wilson and wife of Spokane injured seriously.
The former state legislator and three time Helena mayor who lived in Clark counties passed away at age seventy six. He served in public office for many years and was a recognizable figure in Montana politics.
City of Mexico reports Francisco Castro, Nicaragua's minister plenipotentiary in Mexico, said troops were sent to the Honduran border to counter a threatened expedition against President Zehana by exiled Nicaraguans. He added the government did not sanction the expedition against Salvador.
Chief McMillin arrested Edgar Williams and Jordan Patterson on a seduction charge after warrants issued by Judge McClellian. The two were found returning from the south on Santa Fe train No 30 and jailed awaiting a morning hearing. Accusations involve two young colored girls and their parents.

Helena Montana May 14 Dr WL Steele longtime physician died at his home at 115 this morning He was born in South Carolina and graduated from Charlton Medical College in 1857 He moved to Colorado in 1859 then to Montana in 1882 serving as first at Hannock City and later at Ahier Culch He settled in Helena in 1864 and served as sheriff of Lewis County
A May tremor reported from Winnipes and western Canada unsettled residents. Hospitals and hotels in Regina were shaken, with shelves rattling and people fleeing in fear as the quake struck and authorities assessed damage.
Keat Pathe May 16 report that northern Montane felt a tremor followed by heavy rain and wind. Damage was limited to a stack storing emuelter smoke. investigation found no serious impact.
Washington May 16 Beginning tomorrow the Senate will sit at 10 AM to hasten action on the tariff bill. Insurgents blame Republicans for delays while leaders seek to exhaust criticism and forge a vote. Deliberations will cover disputed schedules and key speeches, with Depew Simmons Bailey and others shaping strategy. Senate hopes to pass or at least advance the tariff before holidays.
About 5,906 Japanese laborers on Hawaiian sugar estates stage a week old strike demanding wages rise from 18 to 22.50 per month. Planters failed to narrow the dispute aided by imported Portuguese workers and a radical Nipponese paper. Local tensions grow as workers press for better conditions and housing.
Planters with their characteristic polite demands walked out in a body tying up all operations on the sugar plantations. Last Saturday some mills operated in crippled condition using about 600 strike breakers including Hawaiians Portuguese Porto Ricans and Chinese workers.
James Robinson, Reno base ball pitcher, was struck below the heart by a pitched ball and collapsed. Doctors worked to revive him as a brass band played nearby. he was hospitalized and may die. In separate dispatch, Japanese cruisers Aso and Soya completed a visit to Esquimalt with vows of departure to Vancouver.

W A Clark Montana petty senator arrived in New York aboard the Ned Star liner Lap Janda. He described post and telegraph strike conditions in Europe and blamed political as well as industrial causes for the walkout. He noted complaints that the postmaster general bypassed qualified promotions, likening it to Teddy Roosevelt's handling of army officers. Mrs Clark and the Misses Clark stayed in Praney and plan to return in the fall for the Clark mansion reopening.

In Adana Asiatic Turkey on May 6 two hundred Armenians were fired upon shortly after leaving the city by a band. They returned panting and frightened as military commissioners pledged protection and ordered patrols. Police move to restore burned houses while Capt William A Marshall of the North Carolina and Edward Nathan are named in the report.
The Times correspondent reports that General Schefker's proposal to have 25 percent of the army be Christian will be implemented soon. This change aims to reduce attacks on Christians and reflects a shift in Ottoman policy.
Rev. W. A. Barber superintendent of the Tow Anti Saloon league announced that the league has decided to abandon the effort to resubmit constitutional prohibition in Iowa. May 16 statement notes a shift in strategy and ends active political campaigning for the measure.
