Prolonged secret discussions at trades union headquarters in Eccleston Square and a concurrent cabinet meeting in the House of Commons hint at a major move. Reported talks suggest a possible early end to a strike, with labor leaders and ministers meeting late into the night and again the following morning.
The London report notes a peace mood with labor measures not relaxed. The Times says the Trades Union Congress backs talks while miners and shipyard workers face key actions and possible peace negotiations on the strike.
Unsettled Wednesday with possible showers in northeast portions. Mostly fair Wednesday and Thursday with little temperature change. Local reports end yesterday at 6 p m from the University project showing cloud cover and light winds.
A coroner's jury in Fort Morgan, Colorado, ruled the killing of Callie Ray, 40, by Effie Vera Rawlings, 28, justifiable homicide. Rawlings said Ray attempted to force entry through her bedroom window, and she fired at 10:30 p.m. Ray, a rancher and father of three, left behind Lola Ray, his widow and sister of Rawlings.
A New Mexico jury awarded Agapito Sanchez five hundred dollars in a civil suit over the death of his 16 year old daughter Demetelia Sanchez who was struck Oct 6 1924 by a car driven by George Armijo. Armijo denied intoxication and excessive speed asserting the girl darted into the road. The case was the last on the docket for jury trials as Judge Milton J Helmick discharged the panel.
Bishop William T. Manning at the Laird convention of the Episcopal diocese of New York urged a united effort for full observance of Prohibition. He argued the law has not failed and called on Christians to restrain indulgence and help enforce the temperance measure.
A man spent evenings in a road house near the Illinois penitentiary and plans to return to farm work in the morning. The piece notes parolees and freedom matters as a backdrop.
Chicago dispatch reports officials telling Joliet grand jury of alleged influences and parole abuses linked to the escape of seven prisoners and the deputy warden’s killing. May 11 in Santa Fe the state council appointed a committee to assist St. Anthony's orphanage for boys in Albuquerque. The group includes the state deputy and the grand knights of seven councils. The committee will meet at the call of the state deputy, who acts as chairman.
In Washington the Haugen farm relief bill faced defeat in the house while the senate commerce committee closed hearings on the American Oriental ship sale. The Whatson Parker railroad labor bill passed the Senate and goes to the president. The senate prohibition committee favored the revamped city enforcement measure. The interstate commerce commission authorized more railroad facilities in Oregon and California.
San Jose lumberman Hay Hicks plans a street corner Q and A next Friday. He will pay $1 per correct answer until $150 is spent, with city council approval. Hicks aims to gauge local knowledge of civic affairs and general literacy among residents.
In Tucson on May 11, University of Arizona president Cloyd H. Marvin was arraigned behind closed doors before the board of regents on charges alleging disruption of university morale. Present were Rev. E C Tuthill, Dr. Frank C. Lockwood, Marvin, and deans J O Creager and G M Butler among others.
Washington May 11 A revised prohibition enforcement bill won Senate prohibition committee approval and moves to the judiciary committee. It requires bonds and permits for malt beverage makers, allows annual permit reviews with possible renewal denial, imposes harsh penalties for evading or misusing denatured alcohol, strengthens seizure powers, and authorizes retired officers to serve in enforcement without forfeiting pensions. The bill is unlikely to pass this session.
The Domnetta carrying whisky champagne and alcohol valued at 1 420 000 was captured 60 miles southeast of Atlantic City and brought into New York Harbor by the coast guard cutter Seneca. With a crew of 25 aboard the ship is tied to a bootleg ring linked to Emil Wormser. The Donnetta sails under the American flag without papers and faces US commissioner arraignment. A second boat Admiral Schley was seized near Greenport with no crew found.
M C Piecken of Farmington heads New Mexico Grand Army of the Republic for the annual encampment to be held at the Odd Fellows hall with an open session at 9 20 am. A Women’s Relief corps dinner follows at noon and delegates will be chosen for Des Moines.
In Santa Fe on May 11 construction work on the $300,000 tranite Point reservoir for the New Mexico Power company will begin within a month. State Engineer George Neel hydraulic engineers George Waesche and FR Rosenbaum of Sanderson and Porter discuss ground surveys in Santa Fe Canyon and arrangements for equipment, materials and labor.
City faces a bond suit filed by George Taylor to stop bonds totaling 560 000 voted in the last election. The law provides 30 days to answer injunctive actions from service, with 10 days for Taylor to reply after the city answers. A hearing date will be set by the court.
Spring shipment of steers in Clifton and Duncan districts under contract with Denver buyers who bought from the ranges last winter. About 1000 head shipped by May 10. Cattle described as sleek and fat due to heavy rains and abundant grazing.
Elizabeth Salazar a teenage girl arrived in Santa Fe by automobile from Denver via Trinidad and Ratog and is held pending District Judge Holloman ordered probe to determine if she was lured from home.
The Watson-Parker bill to abolish the railroad labor board and create a five member federal mediation board passed the Senate 69 to 13. It sets up an emergency review if voluntary adjustments fail, with a 30 day window before new actions. Key supporters included Jones and Bratton. opposition from some manufacturers and smaller railroads.
Telluride reports mounting posses chasing Navajo sheep herder George Nelson, accused of fatally shooting John Wolfe and his nephew after kidnapping Miss Leonore Wolfe. Weather and rugged terrain hinder search from Lone Cone area toward the Colorado Utah line. Wolfe victims lie in morgue awaiting burial.
Roald Amundsen’s dirigible Norge reached the North Pole at 1 a m Norwegian time and continued toward Nome Alaska two days after Byrd’s airplane flight. The voyage from Kings Bay Spitzbergen to Nome via Point Barrow aims for 50 to 60 hours, weather permitting.
Conference of bishops announces assignments for upcoming meetings. Bishop Anderson of Boston will preside at the Colorado conference in Denver on September 1 and at the West Swedish conference in Denver on September 8, then at Silver City New Mexico on September 16. Other assigned presiders include Bishop Mead at Salt Lake City on August 24 and Bishop Kenya at Douglas Arizona September 30 6.
Mr and Mrs Theodore Van Soelen purchase five of fifteen acres in Tesuque valley from George W Hickox now of California. They plan a handsome Santa Fe style residence, continuing their residency in Albuquerque.
Duncan valley alfalfa growers report three weeks early first cutting due to weather. W H Alexander began April 23 taking off three fourths of a ton. Typically the first cutting occurs May 14. Alexander and others expect six cuts this year with hay graded from all to fancy.
