Crowded special train bound for the Los Angeles Conclave jumps track at a sandy Southern California beach. Fifty miles an hour crash causes many deaths and severe injuries. Victims are burned and trapped in wreckage as rescuers pull bodies from debris.
A Southern Pacific morning special derailed near Surf California, killing twenty five, many Shriners among the dead. Passengers were burned or crushed as the coach wreckage tumbled onto the beach road and the train caught fire, with survivors detailing severest injuries and mangled bodies. A relief train from Santa Barbara ferried doctors and nurses to the scene and to Lompoe, while the injured were sent to Los Angeles and Santa Barbara hospitals.
Monterey May 11 A southbound Mexican Central train derailed six miles north of Bermijilio station. Six Americans among the injured were taken to Torreon by a relief train with physicians and nurses aboard. The crash is described as the railroad’s most serious in years.
