Government reports many industries are resuming operations and transportation is being improved. Officials note progress across sectors and stress continued focus on infrastructure and logistics to support recovery.
London reports on May 7 shows both sides firm in a prolonged strike. Government expands volunteer force and may recruit 50 000 special constables while unions threaten a second defense line. Public order remains surprisingly calm as talks stall and tentative peace seems distant.
Partly cloudy conditions with little temperature change expected over Saturday and Sunday. Highs near 69 six day summaries show mild breezes and no significant precipitation, with the region experiencing limited wind shifts and typical May patterns.
In Danville Illinois on May 7 Uncle Joe Cannon venerable statesman greeted boy scouts former fellow statesmen and delegation of citizens at a birthday party. Newsreel cameras recorded his ninetieth birthday as Battery A First Illinois Light Artillery sent flowers and a huge cake.
The New Mexico Arizona and West Texas Congregationalists meet at First Congregational church with business sessions Saturday morning and a motorcade Saturday afternoon. Friday’s events included talks by Dr. J H Heald and several regional speakers plus a Woman's Club chorus musical program. The afternoon highlights include a church-building society discussion and a devotional on Humility led by Rev M G Bullock.
Miss Margaret Bowman of Las Cruces was crowned May Queen at State College’s annual Karnival. Attendants included Eunice McClure Katherine Turner Katherine Holt Francen McKinney Vella Spivey Irene Hamiel Edith Calhoun and Maude Moncus. The popularity contest named Maude Moncus most popular girl and Jerry Hines greatest Aggie with Robert Smith and Professor Crawford among other honors.
Delegates from Colorado Kansas Nebraska and Oklahoma met behind closed doors in Wichita to discuss plans for operating a wheat pool formed by their associations. Texas and the fifth estate pool were not represented and officials gave no clear indication of a withdrawal.
Nathan Leopold Jr. disclosed to Will County officials that seven convicts who escaped after killing deputy warden Hjalmar Rehn at Stateville offered him a chance to flee. He allegedly refused and remained in solitary confinement as prosecutors expanded the murder inquiry and prepared a coroner's inquest into the escape and prison conditions.
Farm relief debate continued as Republican leaders sought views of President Coolidge. The federal trade commission charged actions restricting co operation among flour millers. Senate prohibition committee agreed to drop administration bills to intensify enforcement. Coolidge signed a 10 million dollar appropriation for public service buildings. The postal committee, Hoover, and Mead decided to restore post cards to one cent.
San Francisco May 7 A cable car on California Street warning passengers to lie flat or stay seated prevented greater harm when it plunged four blocks down a hill after colliding with another car. One woman was fatally injured, about 125 people hurt, with Edna Gilbride most seriously injured and Mail L. Requea hospitalized with shock.
In Kansas City Missouri 2000 carpenters and building trades council members ordered a strike to begin at noon Saturday if contractors do not grant wage increases of 1124 cents an hour. The walkout would affect major building operations in the metro area as the builders' association urged members to ignore demands.
New York May 7 A vision of lavish automobiles obtainable for a loaf of bread by late 1933 rests on National Automobile Chamber of Commerce data. The 1914 dollar is worth 59 cents, while the 1914 automobile dollar is $1.16, with 1 482 and 552 bushels of wheat needed respectively. The report notes 1925 U S and Canada vehicle output, U S ownership of 81 percent of world motor vehicles, and a motor industry employing over 2.4 million people along with highway tax figures near one billion dollars.
Las Vegas New Mexico May 17 Special excursions for students in the summer session opening June 1 include three day all expense paid tours into Indian country Taos and mountain districts with the Santa Fe- Harvey Indian detour service. Cooperation from Outing clubs and swimming boating at Storrie Lake described with a larger enrollment expected.
Judge Edwin Mechem of the third judicial district plans to retire this fall and is being discussed as a potential Republican candidate for governor. Republican leaders say his record in the gubernatorial contest trials earned broad praise from Democrats and could attract independent voters or ballot scrapers across the state.
Artesia New Mexico May 7 Artesia post of the American Legion turned out almost to the last man to meet State Commander Jesus M. Baca and State Adjutant Bronson M. Cutting touring the state for a membership drive. The officials urged passage of the Reed Johnson bill for disabled veterans relief. Cox praised the state leaders calling Baca the best state commander the Legion has had. Meetings were also held at Hope Hagerman and Dexter.
A fire on A. A. Woodbury’s Burlington farm destroyed sixteen purebred Guernsey cattle including a $25 000 show bull. The owner said estimating the loss was impossible as the herd encompassed years of breeding and his entire 1926 show circuit.
Petition to impeach Judge Isaac M. Meekins cites alleged tax fixing while serving as general consul for the alien property custodian. Daniel F. Hickey claims Meekins sold influence to David H. Blair and others, aiding Roessler & Hasslacher holdings and reversing tax rulings for at least $20,000.
The Santa Fe California Limited collided with eastbound train No 8 while it stood on a switch at Chambers Arizona Friday night. No injuries were known. No cause report yet. the No 8 was due here at 11 30 p m and expected to arrive at 2 45 a m Saturday.
The New York State Athletic Commission rejects Gene Tunney's challenge to Jack Dempsey citing Harry Wills as prior claimant. Tunney's camp vows further moves in Tex Rickard's bid to pit Tunney against Dempsey this fall with a blanket challenge to Wills or another top heavyweight expected next week.
The Old Fiddlers contest is repeated Monday evening in the high school auditorium. It will be free to the public, same as Wednesday's event. Fortnightly Music club and the Journal-Herald organize it to welcome more fiddlers and add new stunts.
A cyclone in Leflore county, Oklahoma, killed a man and a boy and seriously injured two children when their home between Spiro and Panama collapsed. Two towns, Poteau and Heavener, lost power as trees felled lines. Damage touched Morse and Micawber with two houses destroyed and a near miss on a school. Torrential rain and hail hit western Muskogee county and Taft lowlands flooded.
A tornado swept east central and eastern Oklahoma on Friday killing Obra Tidwell 73 and his 15 year old son Mrs R M Masterson near Leflore county. Ralph Brendley 80 of Boynton was taken to a Muskogee hospital with a fractured skull. Six more people, five of them negroes, were injured in a four mile by quarter mile swath in Okmulgee county. Number of damaged houses and crop losses undetermined as storm areas stretched across the state. Telephone service to affected areas was disrupted.
Tornadoes swept Okmulgee Okfuskee and Muskogee counties injuring six people five of them Black and destroying a score of houses with heavy damage in Okmulgee County where five homes were leveled and three injuries reported. An additional tornado origin was noted.
Moscow May 7 reports the Soviet press jubilant over British newspaper strike restraint. Izvestia may soon be produced in the London Times office as part of a bold claim by a Soviet paper.
In Johannesburg on May 7 the Typographical union warned members not to print material damaging to the British strikers. The union declared its national agreement precludes such action and urged printers to renounce the South African trade union's appeal.
Capetown reports labor groups across the Union of South Africa pass sympathy resolutions and urge appeals for funds to aid British workers on strike. In Moscow, the Soviet trade unions transfer 2,000,000 rubles to the British Trades Union Congress as part of ongoing aid to strikers.
Hilaro Martinez, Spain's light weight champion, defeated Johnny Simpson of San Antonio, Texas, with a second round knockout in a ten round bout at Benjamin Field Arena in Tampa Florida on Friday night.
John Fallon aged 23 of Santa Barbara was killed and his fiancée Marjorie Low was badly injured when their car overturned Friday. Miss Low is the niece of former New York City Mayor Beth Low. The sister, Miss Helen Low, was driving the vehicle.

Frank Andrews councilman will build one of the state’s largest garages spanning the block between Lower San Francisco Street and Water Street in Santa Fe. The project, costing about 35000 dollars, will have entrances on both streets.
