A historical piece recalls Wilhelm Reinhard de L Homme von Courbiere and Graudenz Fortress during the wars after Jena. It cites the 1807 siege led by Savary, the fortress defense vowed to never surrender, and the seven word epitaph that kept his memory alive.
Courbiere, a Prussian-born commander famed for humor and epigrams, endured a long siege at Graudenz as French, Saxon, and Polish forces pressed the fortress. After a 43 week conflict, the Siete abandoned on December 12 1807, and Courbiere died July 25 1801 aged 78. He rests beside his wife, Weise von Tannenbers, near bastion three behind the arsenal that bears his name.
Stockholders receive notice of a plan by Amalgamated Copper to dissolve the holding company of Anaconda Copper Mining. The plan calls for selling Anaconda stock to fund liabilities and provide about $2 per Amalgamated share to be distributed. Anaconda shareholders vote May 19 on par value change to $50 and dissolution plan.
The Atlantic Fruit company announces the purchase of steamships Sarbia and Sibiria from Hamburg-American. The vessels will be registered in the United States and used in the New York West Indies trade. Sarbia is 2,168 tons and Sibiria is 2,476 tons, with Sarbia laid up in New York and Sibiria in Baltimore.
A late day wind storm in Mermentaum, Jennings Parish, killed one white man and five black residents and injured about twenty five others. The storm destroyed several buildings as it swept the town from the southwest. Local reports describe a sudden, powerful gust.

London officials announced a prohibition on the export of Belgian bank notes in Britain. A separate proclamation barred coal exports to non allied nations, restricting shipments to British possessions or allies.
The American ship Carolyn from Savannah arrived March 30 bound for Rotterdam and is discharging cotton at Leith Scotland. The British government has purchased part of the cargo, with the rest sent to a prize court, likely destined for Germany.

Dukla pass and Dukla town are claimed taken, Tarnow recaptured by Russians, and Muscovites pushed eastward across the Wistoka. Meantime German gains on the western front are denied by Paris with heavy losses claimed by the Allies. Prime ministers discuss Dardanelles, while Japan submits demands to China and the U.S. calls for open door and China’s territorial integrity.
China accepts all demands unconditionally, as Mikado's government insists on full acceptance. The ultimatum prepared by Japan is to be served today, signaling a potential shift in regional diplomacy.

Lovey Mitchell, held in Warren County Jail for the Dawson family murder at Monmouth, was released today after the circuit court grand jury took no action. The delay prompted officials to free him pending further proceedings.
