Senate rejects the House defense bill prompting a clash on a substitute that reshapes debt issues. The substitute cuts the proposed bond issue and reduces the War Board’s membership while renaming it to reflect a new governance approach.
The New Mexico House backed the national guard bill after a two hour filibuster, final 28 to 14, with leaders Sanchez Francis and Gonzales opposing. A telegram from Senator A B Fall praised the vote as a defense and agricultural development boost amid European tensions and calls for federal funding.
Both houses adjourned at 10 pm until Monday morning as they consider the senate committee substitute for House bill No 1. Debate centers on Pardue plea over governor’s approval while defense concerns loom in the stalled bill.

E. Jacob Crull of Roundup Montana, who lost the republican nomination for congress to Jeannette Rankin in 1916, drank poison at an undertaker's and died in Elkhart Indiana after visiting relatives. No cause for the act is known. Crull was not married. United States Socialist party to be represented at the international congress in Stockholm on May 15.
British flyers in France report bold combats with German aircraft. One pilot outmaneuvers three foes after a ten mile pursuit, feigns landing to lure pursuers, then escapes as heavy fire drives the attackers back toward British lines. Another captain fights six Germans near Cambrai and survives a near-ground spin after an anti-aircraft hit.
Liberty Loan drive continues to attract enormous support with subscriptions approaching a half million dollars per minute. Government appeals prompt a veritable avalanche of money for war purposes.
Washington May 5 The Liberty Loan drive shows massive over subscriptions with state totals led by Texas 3 526 million and New Mexico 195 600 while Arizona reports 200 000 and Colorado 1 832 000 as subscriptions pour in across the nation. Bank and institution participation expands rapidly with New York Alone listing 55 000 000.
Washington May 5 Plans for uniting women's organizations for patriotic work were announced by the women's committee of the Council of National Defense. State chairmen will hold conferences of society representatives to coordinate efforts and an appeal urged women to focus on food production and conservation and to keep life steady, normal, and sane.
Berlin reports a special lease line item notes the federal diet committee for German affairs will meet Tuesday to hear a statement from Imperial Chancellor Dr von Bethmann-Hollweg on military political and economic conditions. It is anticipated his address will respond to a parliamentary interpellation by observers and social democrats about Germany's war aims.
Paris reports the French ambassador to Switzerland says a Hlavas dispatch from Berne informed the Swiss political department that France regrets an aerial bombardment of Porrenturi on April 26. He promises proper punishment and indemnity for the Swiss town.
Desperate fighting continues as British forces press deep into the Hindenburg Line. Reports indicate many French units have achieved gains and taken prisoners amid fierce assaults on multiple sectors.
French forces push toward Laon with gains from Soissons to Laon and along the Aisne front. They report high casualties for Germany, over 5,360 prisoners in two days, and control of key high ground from Cerny to the Ailette river. Russian turmoil breeds uncertainty as government resists protests while Russia contemplates surrender of notes to Entente.
Francia B. Young a Civil War veteran died in Joliet at age 84. In his final moments he urged his son Edward to enlist and uphold the family fighting honor, recalling ancestors who fought in the Revolution, War of 1812, and Civil War. Edward enlisted in the army to carry on the legacy.
Washington May 5. National Guard officers bound for training camps will not be sent to camp before May 24. Camps will not be open to officers as they are needed with regiments. The exception applies to officers assigned as instructors.
The article reports that Ruggia demands peace with no annexation or indemnity. It notes council and soldiers' and workers' delegates defining terms for ending the war and establishing terms of agreement and truce.

New York May 5 The naval consulting board headed by W L Saunders reports plans to tackle the submarine threat have shown practical tests off the Atlantic coast and may involve land operations and an offensive against the Kiel canal. Saunders cautions he is voicing a personal opinion and details are not released.
The naval consulting board report on devices to defeat German submarines had not reached Secretary Daniels. Naval officers voiced strong confidence in the board’s work while Mr Saunders continued a personal probe into the submarine problem.
A Prague telegram to Basel newspapers via Geneva reports martial law in Bohemia. All Bohemian newspapers have suspended publication as the news spreads.
Washington May 5 Secretary Houston appeals to women of the United States to practice thrift at home to aid the war effort. She says savings from gardens can feed armies and ships, urging balanced meals, food preservation, and avoidance of waste. Every ounce saved supports production and distribution for the nation.
French leaders declare the war a fight for humanity not profit and urge American workers to join the effort. Joffre praises the Marne victory and the unity of front and factory to support France against Germany. Viviani rebuts claims of a capitalists’ war and appeals to diverse laborers to rally for liberty and democracy.
