The trial featured a lengthy hypothetical question read by defense counsel to determine Captain Peter C. Hains mental state after he killed William E. Annis. Alienists discussed manic and depressive insanity as possible conditions, noting impulsive bursts from first hearing of the Annis name to the shooting. Captain Hains briefly reacted when the alleged confession of Claudia Halne was read, then resumed his usual withdrawn stance.

San Sebastian Spain May 5 Senor Castro of Venezuela said to have been advised by his physicians to go to the Canary Islands He expressed the hope the Spanish Government would raise no objection to his residence there as he was desirous of living henceforth away from political agitation.
The Venezuelan consul in Santander Spain rejects Castro's claim that Venezuela is pressing for the former president's return and states the government is not interfering with his private property. He says Caracas has not called for his return.
Sparks from a beefsteak fry held by university students set Flagstaff Mountain forest on May 5. A flying fagot started the blaze which quickly grew beyond control. The fire burned all night, destroying thousands of acres on one side of the mountain and is not yet under control.
In San Francisco May 5 the prosecution in the Patrick Calhoun bribery case presented new testimony. William Abbott described taking 50000 from the mint in May 1906 and carrying it with Tirey Ford to the United Railroads office to pay supervisors. Abbott also testified to later moving another 100000 in similar fashion in July 1906, with details later unclear. TheMint cashier William Cole testified to paying the 50000 in mixed denominations. A heated exchange occurred between Francis Heney and A A Moore over trial tactics.
News from Kingston, St Vincent that Captain Collin Stephenson and crew of the Carrie D Knowles, long believed lost, may be imprisoned in Venezuela. An escaped prisoner Payne told authorities the vessel was seized in distress and the crew confined. further inquiry ordered.
Washington May 5 The tariff bill adjournment prospects faded as the president and Congress debated the Aldrich measure. Conferees from both houses face lengthy talks before any new tariff law can pass. The president hints at an inheritance tax plan to shore up finances if deficits grow, while sticking to revenue goals and economy.
Reports circulated that a tornado struck Carter county and devastated Ardmore with a population around 1500. Wires were down and confirmation was not possible early morning. Western Union advised of a storm near Ardmore as the rumors spread.

From Constantinople on May 6 the commission listing the Yildiz palace property reports bank notes totaling 2 250 000 dollars and a large stash of treasury papers. It also notes Abdul Hamid held more than 5 000 000 dollars deposited in a foreign bank.
Olympia Washington May 5 Adjutant General Hamilton longtime state military official was arrested on embezzlement and forgery charges after an inquiry found a ledger showing over 17 000 spent on a single regiment and more than 56 000 stolen from the state military fund Officials say no such shell purchases were made from government arsenals and the legislature had authorized 32 000 to cover deficits
Mellingham May 6. In a petition regarding a banker who accepted a bad check, ex Governor Mead commented that charges against former Adjutant General Hamilton and others may be true. He stated he or his secretary did not sign or approve forged documents. Mead said he cannot accept the secretary of state appointment under these circumstances.
May 4 report from Tyler shows a force of rangers arriving to probe the lynching of Jim Hodge a black man accused of assaulting Miss Minnie Harmon. Nineteen citizens have been arrested in the unfolding case and charges of guilt or innocence remain disputed.
