Chitto Harjo faces a bold plan to wage war on the Pale Face as three hundred men close in at Canadian Bottoms. The faction, led by Crazy Snake, moves toward a speedy and sensational finish in a historically tense confrontation.
Morning Journal reports a large posse of militiamen and deputy sheriffs surrounded Crazy Snake’s band near his home, a violent exchange with over 200 shots, one Indian killed, several captured, and the pursuit continuing in Creek Nation districts toward Hickory Grounds.
Mrs Helen Boyle arrested in Mercer for kidnapping Willie Whiths of Bharon. She had lived in Kanea City in spring and summer 1907 and used the name Helen Parker wife of Frank A Parker who ran a restaurant on East Twelfth Street. Both she and her husband were arrested May 1907.
Missouri penitentiary experts say a woman arrested with J H Boyle in the Whitla kidnapping case is the same person who visited Frank Miner, a St Louis convict, and who earlier passed as Mrs Helen Parker in Kansas City with her husband Frank Parker. She gave name and age twenty one and claimed birth in Illinois.
Washington March 29 the secretary of the interior altered a restoration order for lands withdrawn for the Salt River project in Arizona. The lands would not be opened for settlement on June 2 or entry on July 3 because they are desert in character and no legitimate settlements could be made. Private parties are preparing to reclaim much of the land and a settlement chance may come later.
President Taft nominates Ira A. Abbott of Massachusetts to be associate justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court, replacing himself, with Abbott previously appointed by Roosevelt. The same batch includes Jose Gonzales for Las Cruces land office register. Death reported in Carlsbad of Mrs Walter Boughton, wife of a patent examiner now residing in New Mexico City.
Trenton Me March 24 Every road within fifteen miles of the city is watched to capture the last of three robbers who looted a number of torer in Brickard and wounded Marshal Geo Caraway at Jamesport A posse formed after Caraway was shot two of the bandits were captured and jailed the third eluded capture most loot recovered.
Senator Bacon protested minority exclusion from tariff bill discussions, citing subcommittee norms. Senator Hale defended Republican practice, while Money Culbertson Newlands and Bikins urged broader minority access. Elkins laments New England influence on the finance committee amid regional duties concerns.
In Washington on March 29 a Democratic caucus split as Mr Moon of Tennessee condemned the party line after voting with Republicans on the Fitzgerald amendment. Seattle March 29 Mrs Gunjiro Aoki wed a Japanese husband and renounced her American citizenship, becoming subject to the emperor of Japan. The Trinity Episcopal church rector defended the ceremony, citing parental consent and duty to wed.
Oakland March 29 Archdeacon Emery who has led the mission field for nearly a decade resigns his post. He handed his formal resignation and a letter outlining his reasons to sever ties with the California jurisdiction to Bishop Nichols who has not acted or released the letter. The resignation follows public attention over his daughter Helen Gladys Emery’s marriage to Gunjiro Aoki prompting worry and criticism across the state.
Reading Pa March 2. The executive board of the eastern division of the Amalgamated Tin and Steel Workers association rejected a wage reduction proposed by the iron portion of the division. The policy affects about 10 000 iron workers including puddlers and helpers, effective with Monday day shifts. The cut from 4.50 to 3.75 per ton for puddlers, with proportional cuts for others, applies to the eastern half of Pennsylvania.
George B. Cortelyou, former secretary of the treasury, assumed the presidency of Consolidated Gas company in New York today marking a new phase in his career and the companys leadership.
United States district court approves settlement as Utah Fuel Company pays 200000 dollars and pleads guilty to obtaining coal land by fraud. The case centers on 1440 acres in Sevier County, linked to dummy entrymen and a Rio Grande subsidiary, with fines totaling 8000 dollars and 192000 dollars judgment to the government and land reverting to public domain.
Mary Farmer, convicted of murdering Mrs. Sarah Brennan in Brownville, was executed by electric chair at Auburn prison. In a public confession she claimed her husband James Farmer is innocent and unaware of the crime. The ceremony involved her spiritual adviser Father Hickey, her husband in a separate cell, and witnesses including five women.
Washington March 2 Secretary Ballinger directed all Interior Bureau chiefs to submit by May 20 estimates covering office expenses for the fiscal year 1911 and to include items not strictly necessary for public service. The move follows a cabinet and Taft administration pledge to tighten economy in appropriations.
Grand jury charges J. Bo Mumphreye alias Nigger Arkansas and Henry Farr with robbing 550,000 from Wells Fargo Express at French New Mexico in August 1905. Police and detectives guarded the area. masked robbers halted a payroll shipment from Albuquerque to Dawson. None of the money recovered.
