Board of Regents responds to circulating reports of deliberate disruption at the University of New Mexico. A clash between the president and faculty is described as magnified to alarming proportions, with wild stories spreading to newspapers in other cities.
Albuquerque reports circulated claim widespread faculty trouble at the University of New Mexico after the expulsion of Roy Baldwin. The regents will review appointments as President Tight and Professors Asplund and Espinosa clash, while rumors of a larger shakeup are investigated and denied.
Hon Frank W. Clancy and Dr James H. Wroth rebuke the article as vague and erroneous. They deny any board meeting or student demand for resignations, stating no faculty troubles have been presented or discussed by the board.
In Denver on March 27 the trial of John Cradlebaugh for the shooting of Frederick W Watton featured the widow Florence Walton who testified that Cradlebaugh had threatened to kill the man who despoiled his home on three occasions and that the threats dated back a year. The defense sought to admit letters written by Walton as evidence.
The defense seeks to prove letters show a Walton Cradlebaugh kidnapping plot. Cradlebaugh explains he came to Denver to recover his child where he met and shot Walton. Cradlebaugh testifies about alleged illegal relations with Walton and the impact on the case.
Joliet March 27 four people are reported killed and six others badly injured in an explosion at the Illinois Steel company plant. The blast was caused by a slip in No 1 blast furnace forcing gas into engine and boiler rooms. Louis Johnson named among the dead. William Tennyson, an engineer, is believed fatally burned.
J A Morris shot and killed his wife then shot himself in Salt Lake after the couple had separated in Reno. He died a few hours later, following the fatal act. The pair had previously separated and she had come to Salt Lake. Morris followed.
Creditors have taken over all Calkins syndicate properties including the San Francisco publishing plant, the Sacramento Union, and Fresno Herald. L. K. Bontz is named temporary Union manager in Sacramento and W. E. Prisk handles Fresno Herald. Debts on the San Francisco plant total about 156000 dollars. stockholders are said to receive nothing and may face further liability in a final settlement.
In San Francisco on March 27 the Calkins syndicate denied reports that creditors had seized its property. A spokesman called the inquiry unfounded saying there is nothing in it.
Ed ward H Harriman leaves Burlingame California for New York City with his daughter physician and a party. He cites improved health and aims to keep retirement plans private while delaying any public announcement of handing over control to trusted lieutenants.
Springfield residents march to show stance on liquor as election approaches next Monday. Sunday school children joined, hymns performed, and the parade paused business activity. Rev. P. Ross Parish led the procession with other ministers.
Washington announces after April 1 imports of opium and all forms including morphine and heroin are restricted to medicinal use only. Smoking opium is banned and confiscated. other forms may enter in bond for medical treatment with strict importer records and declarations. Cities listed for import, with quantities set for opium and derivatives.
El Paso Texas March 27 President Taft who is a stockholder in Coleman Fulton Pastner company is interested in selling fifty high grade steers and a number of cattle to the Vera Drag Cattle company of Mexico City. All cattle came from the Taft herd at Gregory Texas and a record breaking price is reported.
In Cedar Rapids area, Mrs. John Lynch cut the throats of her five week old baby and a three year old son, then attacked two other children who escaped. She cut her own throat and set the dwelling on fire. Firefighters recovered two bodies and a fourth child was rescued alive from the ruins, after the house burned down.
Paris March 27 The threatened resumption of the postal workers strike was averted after a conference between M Barthou minister of public works posts and telegraphs and the strike committee. The committee explained its offensive manifesto placarded against the authors, which the government had pledged to prosecute, had not been drawn up since the strike ended.
Deputation told the minister postal workers now seek to fulfill their duties fully. The minister accepted the explanation and the government decided to drop the matter.
Boston March 27. Lawrence R Boyne a veteran newspaper man shot and killed his wife then killed himself at the public garden near the Roy ston street subway entrance. He was about forty and had worked twenty years at the Boston Globe.
Captain John C. Fremont of the United States battleship Mississippi issues to the Associated Press a denial of the report that an explosion occurred aboard the ship. He states there is not the faintest basis for such a rumor.
Alfred Shrubb of England defeated Abbie Wood and two local runners in a fifteen mile relay race in Montreal Ontario. He completed the distance in 1 hour 17 minutes 18.25 seconds, finishing eight laps ahead of the field.
Taos County chairman Ro Pooler was shot dead inside his Taos home. George Potter, Taos resident and rival, is arrested with a 46 40 Winchester and threats allegedly made against Pooler. Governor Curry orders Captain Fornoff to Taos for custody and transfer to the penitentiary.
The House in Washington on March 27 devoted most of its discussion to academic questions around the tariff bill. Representatives Gardner of Massachusetts, Longworth of Ohio, and Harrison of New York spoke, with the Ways and Means newcomer Harrison among the few tariff training committee voices. The chamber adjourned to meet Monday at 4 PM, with sessions planned 10 AM to 6 PM, a two hour noon recess, and continuing 6 PM to 10:30 PM.
Seattle March 207 At the request of Seattle Tacoma Spokane and Portland chambers Japanese consuls cable an invitation for five Japanese chambers to lead a delegation of fifteen leading businessmen and fifteen trade experts on a U S visit in September. The party will tour all major manufacturing and trade centers across the United States.
Oklahoma militia mobilizes after a night battle at Hickory Ground between five officers and twenty Snake clan Creek Indians. Charles Daum and Herman Odom are killed, Frank Jones, William Carr escape.swift wounded. As bodies lie in Harjo yard, armed forces mobilize from Durant Chandler Muskogee and Oklahoma City to confront the Snake band.
Pittsburg dispatch details Mrs James Boyle wife of the alleged kidnapper making a dramatic attempt to jump from a moving train en route to Mercer jail. She denies involvement in the Willie Whitla kidnapping and claims no kinship to the Chicago McDermotts while offering little cooperation.
Attorney Cochran filed information before Justice McClay in Mercer charging Boyle and his wife with abduction. A hearing is scheduled for Monday. Whitla stated he had information suggesting Mrs Boyle was formerly Miss Anna McDermott of Chicago.
William McDermott, a retired Chicago firefighter, travels to Pittsburgh amid a kidnapping case involving Willie Whitla. He believes Mrs. James Hi Boyle is his daughter, pursuing leads in the alleged abduction.
