William Z. Foster, charged with violating Michigan criminal syndicalism law by attending a national communist convention near St. Joseph last August, must face a jury for possible acquittal or punishment. Judge White overruled a defense motion and ruled the convention texts admissible as evidence.
Washington March 22 AP The deficit for the current fiscal year now about 150 million after allowance for Britain cash payments. Director Lord says new drive to curtail federal spending will be undertaken while treasury notes income tax receipts between March 1 and 15 total between 425 and 450 million.

Matthew I. Griffin formerly head of the U S secret service in Philadelphia and six co defendants were found guilty by a federal court jury of conspiracy to defraud the government. The alleged plot swapped water for whisky in a large shipment to Greece. They were held on 106000 bail each pending new trial motion. If successful, the scheme could have net $5 600 000.

Des Moines Iowa March 22 Colonel Robert W Stewart chairman of the board of Standard Oil Company of Indiana said in an address to company employes Des Moines Motor Trades bureau and local bankers that the firm cannot raise gasoline prices to a dollar a gallon even if able such a move would put the corporation out of business He warned a one dollar gasoline price would reduce consumption hurt automobile factories and wreck Standard Oil Company
