New York Times reports a government push to curb press freedom faces scrutiny as a man testifies before a Senate lobbying committee. He argues the inquiry oversteps constitutional rights, challenging the commission's authority and seeking broader protections for journalists.
New York Times editor in chief Charles R. Miller defended his paper before the Senate ship purchase bill committee denying any outside pressure on news coverage. He argued the Times separates news from editorials and criticized the inquiry as invasion of press liberty while reaffirming opposition to government ownership and citing London Times links.
Senator Sutherland questions railroads payment in a post matter while Senator Walsh defends press independence and denies outside influence from shipping interests. Mr Miller asserts the Times is self judgment, noting readers form public opinion quickly and penalties from readers may be harsher than congressional consequences.
James H. Scott of Alaska Seattle and London markets kelp potash in New York. He notes kelp could surpass German imports as war heightens demand and cites government research and Secretary Wilson on Pacific coast kelp supplies.

Judge Anderson overruled the objection, allowing testimony about payment for votes and fake pay checks used at Sylvester Jordan’s saloon, with Jordan and others having pleaded guilty. Testimony on alleged illegal registrations continued.
Vessel that escaped disaster off the Falkland Islands is pursued off Juan Fernandez as naval chase continues. The ship identified as German Grutser Dresden 15 or NT 10 now faces fate after the perilous incident at sea.
The British admiralty announced the German cruiser Dresden was sunk near Juan Fernandez island after a five minute engagement with British ships. Fifteen crew wounded. no British casualties. Dresden, last seen westward after Falklands battle, left only two German vessels at large.
The Colorado House of Representatives unanimously expelled Representative W. W. Howland after a special committee report found charges of receiving a money package in the House chamber February. Howland remained jailed in default of $2,000 bail on perjury charges filed by District Attorneys John A Rush.
The body of Mrs John D Rockefeller was taken from Pocantico Hills and laid to rest in the mausoleum of John D Rockefeller in Sleepy Hollow cemetery. The funeral cortege included the Rockefeller family and household staff as Rev Dr Cornelius Woelfkin read the burial service.
French offensive presses the Kaiser forces in the western zone while Russians hold firm in the eastern front as Allied operations continue.

The Argonne saw increased activity with repulsed enemy counter-attacks, village advances at Vauquelis and Bois-te-Pretre, and a trench mortars captured.

Report from Vienne via Bertin to Lordonm dated March 16 09 denies widespread claim Caernowitz capital of Tukowina was abandoned by Austrian forces in Marehlle.
Vienna reports a Sunday battle in the western Carpathians with Hinesian forces attacking north of the Uzeek pass. Austrian troops countered along the Oper valley and captured four officers and 500 men, while a major assault collapsed. South of the Dniester counter attacks pushed Germans back. artillery duels continue in Poland and west Galicia.
Reported by Paso, Texas March 16 says Yucatan seeks to secede from the Mexican union and ask to become a U S protectorate. The state, rich in sisal exports, has long pursued autonomy while Carranza tensions and Progreso gunboat incident fuel speculation. Captain Ryan cites 40,000 armed men and plans to gain U S recognition or a protectorate status.
An eye wit report from New York dated March 14 describes an explosion occurring at a battery site, causing damage and prompting emergency response. No serious injuries are reported and investigators begin assessing the blast scene at the facility near Gunbove Progress.
London reports a French official history outlining Western Front operations from the war’s start to January. It covers Joffre plans, early setbacks, Alsace and Lorraine actions, and later regrouping as German forces concentrate around Metz and Nancy.
