Villa with about 1 500 men attacked Columbus New Mexico killing at least sixteen Americans and burning many buildings. U S cavalry pursued into Mexico as civilians hid and troops reinforced the border amid a fierce two hour fight.
Washington reports 2000 U S troops ready to pursue Francisco Villa and his outlaw band after the Columbus raid. More than 4000 cavalry and a battalion of Fourth Mountain Artillery with thousands of infantry prepare to concentrate on short notice.
Albert T. Wilson of Clifton Arizona elected president of the Panhandle and Southwestern Stockmen's association at the final convention session. Billy Amonett of El Paso secures clear majority to win the secretary's race after a hard-fought vote. Hunt concedes after remaining rivals Parrott and Flate. El Paso chosen as next meeting site and permanent headquarters planned.
The Judiciary sub committee urged reopening Brandeis inquiry hearings while Tillman support sought to keep armor plate plant bill unfinished. McCumber withdrew his resolution warning against armed ships. Executive appropriations debate resumed. The meeting adjourned to meet in El Paso next year after a notable street parade and armory dance. The women’s committee led by Mrs. Brtt Pollock received high regard for guest comfort.
Berlin reports via Overseas News Agency that from September 1915 to date 1 043 civilians have been killed or wounded by hostile artillery and bombs dropped by aircraft in Belgian and French districts occupied by Germans. The February toll includes 17 women and 15 children killed and 20 male civilians plus 46 women and 21 children wounded.
Bisbee Ariz March % The Tenth United States Cavalry stationed at Fort Huachuca ten miles west of town has been ordered to Douglas Ariz to reinforce the border patrol it was stated tonight.
Chicago March report from Col D A Fredericks commander of the central department United States army says only one regiment of infantry can be sent for immediate service in Mexico as others already serve on the border. The Twenty fourth Infantry has just arrived at Fort D A Russell Wyoming and one regiment of cavalry exists but is not at war strength. Caretaker cavalry at multiple forts could be sent but few in number. No artillery engineers or signal corps men are available. There are 8725 central department troops on the Mexican border, mostly infantry.
Major General J Franklin Fell of the Western department says no orders exist to move troops to Mexico and none expected. San Francisco currently houses only coast artillery not to be sent away. Available mobile units include one regiment and two infantry battalions in Washington, plus a cavalry regiment in California at Monterey, San Diego and Calexico. these forces would be ready but likely not required.
Gallant fight described as American soldiers under Major Tompkins pursue bandits. The report highlights a strenuous engagement where 13 men are noted for valor and tenacity in the field.
Colonel Slocum reports Villa forces attacked a town with about 1500 men in the night. U.S. troops repelled the assault with seven killed and five wounded, eight civilians killed, and many Mexican dead. Major Tompkins led mounted pursuit into Mexico. one corporal killed. Fort Bliss received five wounded. Villa's retreat continued toward the river.
The annual Indian appropriation bill was reported by the senate committee increasing the total by 8 million to 9 million, with additional 900 thousand for irrigation in Montana Indian lands, 275 thousand for Oklahoma Indian district schools, and 175 thousand for a Gila river irrigation project near Florence Arizona. The bill authorizes the Indian commissioner to negotiate settlements for outstanding claims against the United States.
Cecilia Ocon a wealthy Mexican linked to Felix Diaz and former regime figure is released on bail after being arrested on conspiracy charges to defraud the government of 4800 dollars by misdeclaring a necklace of fifty seven diamonds brought from Mexico. Bondsman W E Brooks posted 1000 dollars.
Report from Paso on March 9 details the Thirteenth Cavalry clash with Villa bandits in Columbus. Gun jams hindered the early fight enabling Villa escape with fewer casualties, while about 490 attackers were involved and many wounded were evacuated to Fort Bliss.
