The White House prepared a four box briefing to clarify policy on the Pacific treaty. President Harding was asked to explain how the Lansing Ishii agreement would be affected if a four power pact is ratified.
The Senate sent a request for information to the White House on the four power Pacific treaty as administration leaders launch a ratification push. Senator Borah asks what becomes of the Lansing Ishii agreement if the pact is approved. Senator Underwood argues the arms treaties erase the 1917 gentlemen’s agreement, while Lodge signals continued debate to speed ratification.
The War Finance Board announced 186 advances for agricultural and livestock purposes totaling 4,802,000 pounds. Among the loans were the following:
President Harding issued a proclamation prohibiting shipments of arms and munitions of war from the United States to China under a 1922 joint resolution. Violations carry a fine up to 10000 dollars or imprisonment up to two years. The secretary of state may set exceptions and limits.
Washington March 6 A 7 cent per pound import duty on long staple cotton under the emergency tariff law is understood as agreed by Republican Senate Finance Committee members rewriting the Fordney tariff bill. Some members favored 10 cents and may press the issue on the Senate floor. The farm tariff bloc seeks 15 cents while proponents rely on 19 cents. Long staple cotton is largely grown in Arizona New Mexico and southern California.
In Winona Minnesota Mrs Gunder Midboe and four children drowned when a sleigh drawn by two horses toppled in Beaver Creek near Caledonia. The husband and neighbor George Wesland escaped. Children ages six four two and four months. Mother and infant bodies recovered. others still missing.
William Jennings Bryan urged Democrats in Washington to end debate on armament conference treaties in the Senate. He said delaying action diverts attention from the economy, urged reservations only when proposed, and argued Republicans split between reactionaries and progressives. He labeled the western revenue bill as bad and tied the four power Pacific treaty to Republican policies.
Denver March 6 Fair conditions in New Mexico Tuesday with rising temperatures in the north portion Wednesday fair and warmer Arizona also fair Tuesday with warmer conditions in the north portion Wednesday.
Conditions recorded for the twenty four hours ending at 6 p m yesterday show a high of 40 degrees with light precipitation none. Humidity at 6 p m 24 percent and the maximum wind velocity 36 miles per hour from the northwest. Clear day with northwest wind and no notable precipitation.
Washington March 6 investigation by the house military committee into private offers for Muscle Shoals power and nitrate projects moves toward conclusion as hearings near a close. The panel plans to visit Muscle Shoals, while new proposals from Thomas Martin and others are reviewed and testimony from W R Mayo and Henry Ford engineers looms.
Washington reports arrangements to establish a prohibition navy with nine submarine chasers to hunt liquor runners off the Atlantic coast were made without Secretary Mellon approval and may be cancelled. Mellon reportedly believes Congress did not authorize enforcement appropriations for vessel upkeep and liquor enforcement lacks authority to use them as chasers.
The American legation in Peking urged immediate Chinese action to arrest and try those who killed Dr A L Shelton a medical missionary of the Church of the Disciples of Christ at Bantang on February 17. The notice came from the state department after a telegram from Bantang reported the murder. First word reached the church’s general mission board in St Louis.
Dr. Charles P. Steinmetz of General Electric has built a home lightning generator in Schenectady New York that stores electric energy like a cloud. It flashes at 120000 volts before discharging while natural lightning is estimated at fifty million volts and a million horsepower compared with 600000000 horsepower for natural lightning.

John H. Harcuff died in Cincinnati at 105. His father fought in the Revolutionary War and lived to 112. Harcuff ran a flour mill in West Virginia until age 99, then retired and moved to Cincinnati to live with a son.
Amarillo Texas March 6 J G Keller Catholic priest at Slaton said the attack by masked men was the climax of pro German sentiment after he was denied final citizenship papers in Amarillo federal court in June 1921 He says authorities instructed him to refile and start the process over while the vandalism appeared to target him as an individual not the church Keller notes he registered as a German subject after declaring intent and the court record shows final naturalization denials in 1921.
An involuntary bankruptcy petition was filed in federal court against Emanuel Varcoe & Co with liabilities of 100000 and assets of 20000. The firm, member of the Consolidated Stock Exchange, is among several firms facing financial trouble since last November.
Berlin reports that Dr Wolfgang Kapp, leader of the 1920 March uprising that toppled the Ebert government, has offered to surrender for trial on condition of safe conduct and no immediate arrest.

F J Manion of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers testifies that railroads did not properly confer with all employes before seeking wage cuts and that only lower classes were invited to “petting parties” with the big four unions. He notes the board hears 205 railroads and 25 labor groups as wage hearings begin in Chicago.

Paris reports that April 10 is fixed for the opening of the Genoa economic conference. Italy informed the foreign office it would be ready by that date despite a cabinet crisis last month and a request for delay.
Cleveland opened the season with a 9 to 2 victory over Dallas as manager Speaker used five pitchers Coveleskie Bagby Morton Pott and Riedel. Only Morton and Riedel showed wildness with one walk and one hit batter. Stuffy McInnis collected two hits in two appearances driving in a run.
Gatesville Texas March 6 Jack Wolf 19 son of M Wolf prominent Coryell county livestock man surrendered yesterday and was charged with murder in connection with the stabbing of Willis Hopson 16 at a dance. Hopson was called to the door of his home where the dance was in progress and stabbed to death.
Camden New Jersey March 6 tar and feathers will be the punishment for highway robbery at Woodlynne near here Mayor William Kramer announced tonight. Residents report repeated holds ups and robberies of small sums. The mayor says a big tar tank and feathers are ready and the next culprit will be tarred and feathered and paraded through the streets to deter further crimes.
London reports say after news of the prime minister’s indisposition a 15 guinea rate on London insurance covers the risk of resignation before month end. Lloyd George may hold his resignation in abeyance as Unionist leaders pledge support and a coalition trajectory is discussed.

Los Angeles police disclosed a ten page handwritten confession on the William Desmond Taylor case. A brief section from Atlantic City dated February 27 was read by Captain Adams, naming a prominent film figure and hinting at a motive tied to aSouth American woman.
