Reports from Papeete Tahiti dated February describe a cyclone with winds near 120 to 129 miles an hour. The hurricane flooded Papeete destroying government buildings shipyards and many homes. Losses mount to millions with dozens or more dead and Americans among the affected.
The Morning Journal reports that talks about selling the Santa Fe Central to Tallmadges are unfounded. Negotiations are ongoing with other parties to complete the line into Albuquerque and extend to the coal fields and Roswell. Hopewell cites active talks continuing with multiple bidders and says no sale is confirmed.
A White House conference in Washington discusses the statehood bill with Senators Warren, Long, and Barkett detailing prospects and opposition to Foraker’s joint statehood plan for New Mexico and Arizona. Roosevelt’s influence could push the bill to passage if favorable.
A Mississippi tornado that struck Meridian after 6 pm killed at least nineteen, injured twenty four, and destroyed property valued at about a million dollars. Central business blocks and Front street suffered major damage while Georgetown mill area sustained severe destruction. In St. Petersburg on March 3 a sum of 2,690,000 rubles was presented to the Den Ural, Kuhab and Terek Cossacks. Officials described the payment as land improvement funds, but it is viewed as recognition for wartime services and loyalty in quelling internal troubles.
A March report from Trondhjem states 369 boats and 33 men are missing after a ferocious storm wrecked much of the fleet. Only 79 ships reported safe as crews of three to four men faced icy seas and uninhabited islands while awaiting rescue. Wilhelmina daughter of Adolph Busch of St Louis and Lieutenant Edward A Scharrer of Bluitgart Germany wed today at the Church of the Angels Pasadena in an eleven minute Episcopal ceremony. Fifty invited guests witnessed the solemnity as rain fell and darkness lingered over the service.
