Washington February 29. A Senate rift over Attorney General Daugherty’s record sparked a heated session. A proposal for a full investigation dominated five hours of exchanges with accusations, personal jabs, and threats of a broader housecleaning. The debate ended without a vote, plans for a formal inquiry moving to tomorrow.
In a tense session lawmakers urged a Senate committee to probe public officials and their post office practices. The discussion touched on former officials, two year appearance ban, and scrutiny of the Bureau of Investigation with a seven member House committee proposal for a full inquiry.
Birmingham February 29 Attorney General Harry M Daugherty had nothing to say when asked about Senator Heflins claim that he could submit a letter instructing a western district attorney not to prosecute a national committeeman He declined to discuss the senate debate in which he was named as the storm center.
Washington reports the new revenue bill with a Lone Worth compromise income tax and higher surtax rates was adopted by the House. insurgents shifted to support the final amended measure after ejecting the Garner rates, with votes aligning along party lines. The bill faces a Senate slugfest as Coolidge weighs the Mellon plan.
The U S House passed the income tax bill 408 to 0 with the Longworth substitute shaping rates. It reduces normal tax to 2 percent under 41000, 5 percent for 4600 to 8000, 6 percent above 5000, and cuts surtax by 25 percent, effective next year with exceptions for 1924 credits and estate provisions.

Tom Mitchell formerly ran the Combs hotel and a Juarez saloon was freed on bond of 25006 after habeas corpus proceedings in El Paso. He was indicted for murder in the death of J B Williams at a law firm office in El Paso. Williams, a civil engineer and El Paso Rifle Club president, was shot twice. Witnesses testified Mitchell was seated in the reception room when Williams entered and fired. Williams moved into a house on 1113 North Grama Street owned by Mitchell, and a dispute over property and insults preceded the killing.
In Washington a Senate debate on the oil inquiry grew heated as Lenroot clashed with Heflin over the visit to Albert B. Fall at a hotel before his interior secretary statements. Subpoenas were issued for Francis J. McAdoo and others as Palmer denied pressuring underwood and questioned the Fall loan story.
The Rattlesnake well, twenty miles west of the Hogback dome and eight miles SW of Shiprock agency on Navajo land, was brought in as a producer. Oil tests at 64.2 gravity, with 149 feet of oil in casing and a large gas pocket detected. The site, viewed as western big-gas discovery, drew many investors to Farmington and the Navajo reservation, with fourteen feet of sand reached at 260 feet. Related figures include Metropolitan Oil Co and backers led by A C Minox, plus involvement from New York and Baltimore interests.
Federal grand jury names Colonel Charles R. Forbes and contractor John W. Thompson in four indictments alleging conspiracy to commit bribery and defraud the government. The cases relate to hospital contracts funded by about $12 million, with additional figures and figures tied to other officials and firms.

A Sunset Express of the Southern Pacific plunged into a ditch near El Paso Texas injuring three and bruising several others. Miss Ida Scott of Seattle suffered a scalp wound while Mrs Maria Marti of Lone Beach and Abrs C W Hilackford of India also sustained injuries. The derailment due to a broken rail follows two prior SP wrecks in the El Paso area within a week.
