The Washington senate battle over the reciprocity measure intensifies amid procedural clashes and partisan maneuvering. Democrats push to link the tariff bill to a broader package while President Taft backs a natural order prioritizing reciprocity.
In Washington today Col. WW, in Albuquerque for railroad business, says he will pursue both a Albuquerque to Parmington line and an eastward road project. He plans to press the two railroads until they are completed, aiming to advance transport links and economic development. He leaves for New York tomorrow.
Los Angeles June 27 Representatives of the prosecution in the Los Angeles Times dynamiting case confronted Mrs Ortie McManigal after she and her husband, one of the alleged conspirators, were in the grand jury ante room. Her nerves failed and she swooned as McManigal pleaded for her to testify for the prosecution. Attorneys accused detectives of hounding the woman and forced her to retreat to an elevator with her lawyers. The district attorney's office reportedly sought contempt actions but was cautioned by defense attorneys who demanded fair treatment and to avoid coercion. Mrs McManigal was not expected to testify against her husband but to tell what she knew about the charges against the McNamara brothers.
Veitch insisted there was no third degree methods used on Mrs McManigal and denied immunity promises. Inquiry plans recall of Mrs McManigal before the grand jury at 10 tomorrow morning. Her lawyers said she is in bed and will resist appearance while Veitch warned of possible contempt charges.
The second general assembly of the Eucharistic congress met at the church of San Francisco in Madrid. The Beja bishop denounced the Masonic government of Portugal and urged monarchical restoration. A telegram from Cardinal Merry del Val conveyed papal satisfaction with the congress inauguration. French delegate M Toussaint spoke on religion aiding social questions and the balance of capital and labor.
In Washington today Joseph F. Smith president of the Mormon church and Utah Idaho Sugar Co testified before the house sugar trust investigating committee. He said the church sought Havemeyers help to extend its sugar venture for the benefit of the people and did not view him as an industrial pirate. Bishop Charles Nibley supported the testimony as business manager. The committee heard Arbuckle Brothers’ WG Gilmore discuss competition and church finances.
Thousands of delegates converge in San Francisco for the International Sunday School Association convention. Officers are elected with W H Harbhorn of Boston as president and A D Mason of Memphis as recording secretary. Chicago hosts the 1914 gathering as a committee decides the exact date.
The Senate investigation into Lorimer's election heard conflicting testimonies on penny-wealthy support from Edward Hines. Shelby Jones denied saying Hines arranged funds to “put Lorimer over” and contradicted affidavits by Mosher Russell Lowe and Coan. The session centered on events in 1907 Marquette and noted Hines claim that elections cost a barrel of money.
Blaine, a Chicago agency operative, admitted employment to shadow him as testimony concerns a Lorimer contribution. Attorney Hynes questioned a witness about Hines not appearing intoxicated, while Funk denied seeing Hines drink, and Senator Kern dismissed offense in banter with Sen. Kenyon and Hynes.
In Kansas City on June 21 during a hearing for Frank Jackson charged with passing counterfeit money, the U S Commissioner Cocksey’s gold watch was taken. The prisoner concealed the watch in his coat pocket then hid it in his shoe, and later officers recovered it from his cell. Jackson remained in custody on the counterfeit charge.
California aviator Beachey carved through mist and spray circling the falls on a biplane. He crossed the American and Horseshoe falls then landed on the Canadian side amid a light rain before a crowd of about 150000.
In Chicago a human fly fell from the twentieth floor of the Hetson building but was saved by Yepers Murray, son of John Murray. Murray reached out from a beam on the twenty third floor and swung the falling man toward cross beams on the eighteenth floor, saving him though bruised.
Prosecution and defense close arguments as Henwood trial widens. Mrs Springer, a Denver banker, testifies amid lurid testimony about Von Phul and a letter signed Mable. Key witnesses describe May 17 events at the Springer ranch and the alleged attempt to handle Von Phul’s letters.
Washington dispatch reports Senate Territories Chairman William Alden Smith delaying a favorable flood resolution for New Mexico statehood. He says he has not yet written the report and cannot say when it will be ready, though he promises it will be soon. The New Mexico delegation remains in Washington seeking quick action.
In Los Angeles the trial of Mrs. Lillian Paxton Flynn ended with a guilty verdict in the superior court on forgeries totaling 530000. Her attorneys will move for a new trial. sentence not yet pronounced. Flynn used the name Lillian Thaxton to forge deeds and obtain money. Her husband and three children were involved in the case and her husband reportedly fled toward the Mexican insurgents.
In Los Angeles on June 27 the 62nd American Medical Association convention welcomed delegates and visitors to the city. The opening ceremony filled the Baptist Temple as Dr. John St Murphy of Chicago was installed as president. Tomorrow the 13 sections will begin their discussions on science and public health issues.
In Cleveland on June 27 an unidentified negro was killed and farmer John Decker seriously wounded after a gun battle involving three black assailants and a mob of about 200. Decker and his hired man Arthur Beamish chased the trio after they refused exit from Decker's cart and opened fire. A bystander was shot, one negro died, and Decker was injured but expected to recover.
In Utah on June 27 Salt Lake City and other towns voted wet or dry in local option elections. Salt Lake City reported wet 9 162 while Ogden showed wet 4 713 and dry 3 061. Overall about two thirds of smaller towns reported dry.
