Coroners Jury Finds Blame for Herrin Mine Violence

The coroner's jury at Herrin Illinois found deaths from the strife last week were due to acts by officials and Southern Illinois Coal Company. The verdict called for a formal investigation to identify individuals responsible and cited gunshot fatalities among the slain union men.

New Mexico Forest Roads and Trails to Multiply Access

Santa Fe June 25 federal aid roads in New Mexico cover every county with the state highway commission building under a federal cost share. Projects now total 6.3 million under contract and 8.0 million completed, with 2.15 million paid to the state treasury. Frederick Quiet After Saturday Shooting Affray

Frederick Colorado on Sunday remained calm after a Saturday night shooting affray in which Vigil Niehof and Florenz Ray were wounded by a Colorado ranger after an altercation with Don Jarvis. Jarvis was arrested for disturbance as a mob gathered. the ranger fired twice. Corporal Julius Weinberger said the episode is closed and miners returning to work since April 1 are not connected to the trouble. The two wounded were reported in satisfactory condition.

Deming Plans Big Fourth of July Celebration

Ancient Bergt Skeleton Found on New Mexico Farm

In New Mexico on a farm near Roy, Encarnacion Lucero found part of a prehistoric mammoth or mastodon skeleton after a hillside washout. A ten foot six inch tusk and large teeth were recovered, with five men hauling the tusk to Lucero’s home. Doctor Carus Plumlee has notified the Smithsonian and halted digging pending institute action.

Tes Moines Iowa June 25 The Fourteenth cavalry polo team of Fort Des Moines defeated the St Louis Country club 13 to 6. The cavalry also won yesterday's game.

Rattlesnake Bite Fatal To 2YearOld Girl At Artesia

Special Correspondence from Artesia New Mexico reports a 2 year old girl, daughter of Mr and Mrs John Lewis, died from a rattlesnake bite suffered while playing in the yard. The bite occurred on Thursday evening and medical help arrived too late four miles from town. Snakes have been unusually common in the valley recently, especially west of the Pecos River.

Sherman wins Curtiss M4D air service bid in Deming

In Deming New Mexico on June 25 Fred Sherman received notice that his bid to provide an air service for a Curtiss aeroplane has been accepted. The plane is a new Curtiss type M4D tractor biplane with a Curtiss ONS motor. Shipment will come from Memphis Tennessee and Sherman expects delivery soon.

Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce meeting urged to form a legally organized drainage district to access federal Reclamation Service funds under the Smith McNary bill. Unknown 16 Buried in Herrin Field Without Tears

The unknown dead of Herrin were buried in the cemetery with a brief service by four pastors. About 75 mourners, mainly miners who dug the graves, attended. Caskets bore aluminum plates reading At Rest and died June 22 1923.

Fire destroys block in Mexicali with $300000 loss

Fire of undetermined origin swept through Mexicali on June 5, destroying nearly a city block. The blaze leveled a liquor warehouse, a new bar for the Lower California Commercial company, the Monte Carlo gambling hall, a partially built boxing arena and several other structures, with damage estimated at about $300000.
