Delonte Calif June 22 Norman Rose of San Francisco established a new world record by swimming 120 yards in one minute seven and two fifths seconds in a pool here. The previous record of one minute eight and one fifth seconds was held by Perry McGillivray of the Illinois Athletic Club.
The House passed a food control bill granting the president power to direct distribution of food feed and fuel for war and appropriating 152.5 million for enforcement. Prohibition provisions ban use of foodstuffs for alcohol and would allow seizure of all liquor on hand. Vote 365 to 5 with few changes. bill moves to the Senate for possible early conference.
Washington June 23 The house adopted sweeping prohibition amendments to the food control bill forbidding use of foodstuffs for making alcohol and authorizing government control of distilled spirits. The vote 122 to 114 adopted the liquor production ban and limited excisable uses to government industrial scientific or medicinal purposes.
