Taft Wing Battles for Temporary Convention Control

At the Republican National Convention an intense fight erupted over temporary chairmanship and seating, with Elihu Root favored by Taft forces defeating McGovern 658 to 502. Governor Hadley of Missouri pressed for Roosevelt delegates’ seating, arguing for convention autonomy against the national committee, amid security and procedural clashes.

Temporary Republican convention officers named in Chicago list

The subcommittee on arrangements for the Republican national convention in Chicago announces temporary officials. Col. Harry S. New of Indiana chairs. Elihu Reed of New York serves as Chairman Emeritus. The slate includes secretaries Lafayette Gleason and a roster of assistant officers, sergeants at arms, doorkeepers, ushers, medical staff, clergy, and clerks with representatives from multiple states.

New Jersey Congressmen Confer With Wilson in Trenton

Six of seven New Jersey Democratic congressmen met with Governor Wilson in Trenton on June 18 to gauge support for the Baltimore convention. Absent was Congressman McCoy. Afterward James Testiman Hughes said the group felt confident Wilson would be nominated, but he did not disclose figures.

Taft Supporters Elect Root Temporary Chairman at Chicago Convention

At the Chicago convention on June 18 Senator Elihu Root was elected temporary chairman after a contest with Governor Francis E. McGovern. Root faced jeers and interruptions from the Roosevelt faction and Pennsylvania delegates, but resumed his speech and received scattered applause for trust prosecutions and tariff remarks.
