Brownsville Tex June 17 The second squadron of the Third United States cavalry upwards of 460 strong after a battle with bandits slept tonight ten miles from Matamoros opposite here. Maj Edward Anderson and Lt Newman led a hot trail of bandits who attacked detachments near San Benito last night. Crossing began at 1 o clock and finished at sundown with no casualties. A field wireless link was set up to stay in touch with the fourth punitive expedition. The pursuit crossed into Mexico and back across the Rio Grande. A private of troop H lost his horse while crossing and swam to safety as the trail bloodhounds led to a Mexican corpse.
The Senate, not in session, met at noon on Monday. Approval of the annual pension appropriation and various bills occurred. The judiciary committee deferred action on impeachment charges against federal attorney Marshal in New York until Monday. Adjourned at 4:50 a.m. until 9 a.m. Monday.
Reports from Matamoros describe a tense evening with two bullet holes and a rifle found. The town shut all but one saloon as officers urged crowds into frenzy. General Ricaut mobilized about 1500 armed men while Consul Garaia and General Parker discussed avoiding a clash, and bandit leader Aniceto Pizana reportedly disappeared.
