Secretary McAdoo reports subscriptions total 1,300,000,000 short of 760,000,000 and urges renewed effort to reach 15 June target of 790,000,600 while dispelling belief the loan is oversubscribed. He warns seven days remain to raise funds and oversubscribe. The drive must continue vigorously nationwide.
Washington reports the Liberty Loan is lagging behind Treasury forecasts with only about 54 million dollars in daily subscriptions. Officials warn subscriptions must accelerate up to 100 million per day to reach the 2 billion target before the closing date. Secretary McAdoo issued the statement from New Orleans and urged banks and trust companies and offer agencies to promptly report subscriptions to the federal reserve banks.
Senator Gore introduced amendments to the war revenue bill aiming to raise the license fee to 5000 dollars a year, allow the president to seize spirits in bond for war needs, tax spirits by age and reduce by products, and increase beer and malt liquor taxes, all to tighten prohibition.
Springfield June report states no developments on the 14 month old Lloyd Keet kidnaping case. Seven persons under arrest were questioned by the county attorney and again declared their innocence of involvement.

Secretary Wilson expanded waivers of immigration rules to allow Mexican labor for agriculture and broadened the order to include Canadian workers due to a northern lumber labor shortage. The move aims to ease labor shortages by permitting workers to enter for these industries.
Tucson Arizona June Juan Kahn A Rone Papago Indian chief of Santa Rosa village on the Papago reservation jailed on a complaint by Jowell D Martin superintendent that the chieftain advised and blocked young Indians from registering in the national enrollment. Hearing set for next week by United States Commissioner Edwin Jones.
From Petrograd on June 8 the peasants congress adopted a resolution calling the army to submit to discipline and defend revolutionary Russia. It urges peaceful settlements and peasant unity, endorses the war effort, and asks workers to pressure governments against annexations. Minister Kerensky ordered the resolution read to all ranks.
Petrograd telegraphs from Poltava report Krustaloff Nosar former head of the Moscow workmen council proclaims complete autonomy for the Vereyeslav district of Little Russia and refuses supplies to the Vereslav district. He is noted as a key organizer of the 1905 revolutionary movement and later exiled in Siberia after treason trial.
A London official report states British forces captured 6 400, including 132 officers, and held ground firmly against counter attacks.
British forces sharpened their hold on the Messines Wytschaete ridge driving back German counter attacks. German losses exceed 6,490 prisoners with many killed or wounded from mine blasts and British artillery. Pershing arrives in London with 100 American aviators to bolster anti submarine efforts and support Allied operations.
London reports British troops have solidified the line near Oosttaverne and Messines, repelling German counter-attacks. More than 6,400 prisoners, including 122 officers, have been taken and 20 plus guns collected as operations continue near Ypres Crostaverne and Messines.
Berlin dispatch reports Emperor William addressed Brandenburg troops during a western front demonstration. He said the enemy seeks a division, and Germany will exhaust them while trusting in God. He asserted peace would be dictated through Germany as troops sacrifice and persevere.
The State Department stated the United States prefers a republican government for China and hopes monarchy is not restored. Washington warns against vague moves toward a monarchical outcome amid current troubles.
Reports describe the capital city of Little Salvador as ruined by a powerful earthquake and volcanic activity. An area extending about thirty miles square is said to be laid waste by seismic disturbance and volcanic effects.
News from Nicaragua reports a major earthquake hitting San Salvador and nearby areas at 7 p m lasting through the night. Casualties are described as small but fires occurred and relief efforts are organized. San Salvador, Sant Tecla and adjacent villages suffered heavy damage with relief committees formed and aid offered by Nicaragua.
A San Miguel report says San Salvador was destroyed with only about a hundred houses standing. Strong earthquakes were followed by lava and boiling water, leaving widespread devastation.
The London report states Norwegian steamers Sunniva and Skarpens were sunk by mines in the Atlantic with twenty sailors drowned per the Norwegian foreign office via Exchange Telegraph. Lloyd's Shipping News previously listed Sunniva of 559 tons sunk January 28. Skarpens likely refers to Skarpsno of 1,766 tons.
Prisoners taken are dazed from terrific artillery fire as British forces attack. The men, who until recently served on the Russian front, express astonishment at their experiences.

The British steamer Southland sailing from Liverpool to Philadelphia was torpedoed on June 1. Six Americans aboard include Edward Rigney of New York who is missing. Eight died when a magazine exploded after a second torpedo. Forty men in two boats are missing and 159 crew were landed. American survivor A. McCoy of Los Angeles among others.
Edgar Wuypless a former Honolulu mayor and noted criminal lawyer died in his Denver apartments at age 70 after years of ill health. He had defended William Bonney Billy the Kid and earlier practiced in Santa Fe with the firm Hreedon Caypless once attorney general of New Mexico. His wife and son reside in Los Angeles.
