Madison June 2 Wisconsin Governor McGovern chairman of the Wisconsin delegation to the Republican National Convention rejects William Barnes Jr bid for temporary chairman. Barnes urged support for Senator Root. McGovern says Wisconsin delegates favor progressives and warn that backing Root would betray GOP principles and assure defeat in November.
In Chicago on June 2, Roosevelt supporters plan a fight to seat R B Howell of Nebraska as national committeeman, aiming to influence the temporary chair and ticket distribution. Howell cites a Nebraska certificate of election and state laws to back his claim, while Roosevelt managers push for recognition before the convention contests.
National committee members and campaign managers from Taft Roosevelt and other camps arrive for the meeting. A detailed roster lists 230 contested delegates across many states, with Florida delaying arrival and Alaska still pending contest papers.
New York June 2 William Barnes Jr chairman of the Republican state committee said he received Governor McGovern's telegram declining to support his appeal for Wisconsin delegation to back Senator Root as temporary Chicago convention chairman. He stated everyone has a right to his opinion and noted the 4000 responses he has had to the appeal. When asked how many replies favored him he declined to answer.
In Columbus Ohio Senator Theodore KE Burton the temporary Republican state chairman guided the convention to choose Ohio's six delegates for the national gathering. It was reported he proposed a three Roosevelt and three Taft uninstructed split after a late night lone conference with Brown Roosevelt's manager. Roosevelt backers interpreted Brown's remarks as support for a delegation to be instructed for Roosevelt.
Cameron Idaho June 2 Mrs Howard Tupper a widow and her two sons Otto 15 and James 11 drowned on their homestead. Otto swam out and James ran for help. The mother jumped in to aid and all three went under with the elder clinging to his mother and the younger boy.
Taft California June 2 a seven thousand barrel oil gusher near here caught fire and flames spread through the district night turned to day by the blaze. The fiery columns lit up the area as responders battled the inferno amid dense smoke and danger to crews.
London date shows the dockers union began strike pay but there were no further developments today in the dock strike. The brief report notes the absence of action or meetings despite the announced support measure.

Seattle June 2 Joseph Miller confessed murderer of Mrs Effie Lassen and tenant George Felton hanged himself in the city jail after three suicide attempts following arrest Friday night. A fellow prisoner watched as Miller tied a rope from underwear to a cell window bar and feigned sleep before the guard slept. Miller, born in Cincinnati with no living relatives, described his crime as one of the most brutal on police records.
The body of Daniel H. Burnham, architect of the 1893 Chicago world’s fair, was cremated at Heidelberg cemetery after his death yesterday from acute intestinal catarrh with complications.

San Blas Mexico June 2 Having received information that three hundred rifles have been shipped into this district to retrace the rebels the government is examining each piece of freight on all trains at San Blas Culiacan and Mazatlan Two rebel spies were arrested here this morning The government is garrisoning every town in Sinaloa The mines that have been holding their bullion have again deemed conditions safe enough to ship.
Chicago June 2 The Coliseum on Wabash avenue will open June 18 for the Republican national convention the third time since its erection thirteen years ago. The 805 by 170 by 70 foot stone brick steel and concrete fireproof hall lies near Chicago's retail and hotel district and has hosted Roosevelt in 1904 and Taft in 1908.
Los Angeles reports that Death Valley Scotty has sold a mine long doubted by many. He claims a $1,000,000 payment if sale terms hold, with a group led by T. A. Watson F. B. Sharp and F. C. Goodwin purchasing the rim property. They have paid $15,000 upfront and will pay $25,000 next Saturday plus $50,000 monthly until $1,000,000 is reached.
