St Petersburg reports an Abend dispatch that M. Bompard is flying from Paris at Russia’s request to press for peace negotiations amid Japan terms. Officials deny but the rumor persists as Russia negotiates and condemns surrender of ships amid renewed naval action near Vladivostok.
Washington reports from Tokio state that main force and most second class Russian cruisers and subsidiary vessels were destroyed. Aurora and Almas likely sunk as Japanese torpedo attacks prevail. Fog and mist hinder initial reporting of the engagement.
In a June report from Nagasaki Russian torpedo boats captured the Japanese steamer Daishen off Hokkaido and placed a prize crew aboard. The Japanese seized control after mistaking directions, recaptured the vessel, and towed it to Gensan. In Budapest on June 1 two deputies from the people's party Count Stefan Keglevich and Karl Henez dueled with swords after a heated chamber discussion. Keglevich was wounded near the heart and was removed from the field. In Cetinje Montenegro also that morning an earthquake caused collapse of about 500 houses in Beutari Albani with around 200 dead or injured.
Naples reports Vesuvio activity rapidly declining with lava streams waning. One stream has ceased to flow and another shows reduced flow while the main channel advances about thirty meters per second. Brighter explosions are still expected and visitors flock to Umberto Hillock for views.
