Allied forces announce they have breached the German front north of the Somme to a third line. Official reports admit enemy gains but acknowledge severe losses on the British and Allied side.
Reports from both sides describe heavy fighting across the Eastern Front. British forces push toward deeper German defenses north of the Somme, claiming progress and 2,000 more prisoners while Berlin cites severe losses. Russia claims gains near Baranovichi and at Skrobowa, with 1,500 prisoners for Prince Leopold.
The Colorado treasury received a $37,786.30 inheritance tax from the estate of Mahlon D. Thatcher of Pueblo. The estate valued at $9.317 million, with a state tax of $255,668.21 reduced by 5 percent for payment within six months of death.
William A. Brady president of World Film Corporation urged cooperation between manufacturers and exhibitors to advance the motion picture industry. He denounced censorship and protested against a war tax on moving picture theaters during his July 15 address at the convention in Chicago.

For twenty four hours ending at six pm yesterday the maximum temperature was 68 degrees with a range of 24 degrees. The minimum recorded was 68 degrees and the temperature at six pm yesterday was 42 degrees. An east wind was noted with variable directions.
Consideration of the enlarged naval building program was postponed again but will be taken up Monday. Senator Borah proposed a wartime authority for the president to compel production of needed materials. Vice President Marshall sustained a point of order that the measure was general legislation in an appropriation bill.
The Suffolk county grand jury discharged seven men held as accessories in the Miss Margret Ward death case. Five released men Connell Connell Bardwell Sexton and Dr Shanan face Boston indictments for charges tied to the operation and body removal. William Connolly and Daniel Connolly have no charges pending.

Pennsylvania National Guard troops arrive from Marathon with Sixth Cavalry reinforcement from Glenn Springs. Alpine and Marfa units are sent forward as Curranza forces gather abroad. estimates of bandits range widely from a few hundred to over a thousand.
Paris reports the death of Duke de Rohan a Morbihan deputy who died in a hospital at the front from wounds suffered the day before in the Somme battle. He had recently been promoted to captain of infantry.
Madame Langenhan the grand opera star presented Captain Koenig with a loving cup and expressed admiration of Deutschland's commander. The ceremony highlighted cross cultural respect and a gesture honoring military leadership.

Advices claim Mapimi fell to Villa forces June 28 and Bermejillo likewise. Villa followers clashed with de facto troops at Parral where Villistas cried Viva Felix Diaz. By July 16 Villa was attacking Durango city and threats to Torreon persisted with Canuto Reyes said to have defected to Villa. Famine around Torreon worsened as people subsisted on mesquite beans and prickly pears.
Sir Edward Grey the foreign secretary and new earl writes to his constituents. He urges focus on war effort, sacrifice, and a just lasting peace while noting Allied gains and the enemy's retreat as favorable signs for a final success.
Eliseo Arresondo, General Carranza's ambassador, received from the foreign minister a telegram repeating a fortnight old declaration that committees of private Mexican institutions in the United States to confer with similar committees here have no commission from the de facto government to deal with international matters officially or unofficially.
Delegates gathered in St Paul for a national convention aiming to mount a 1 million dollar campaign. Leaders including RK Collin of New York project at least 1 million votes and view the movement as disruptive to Republican and Democratic strength. Possible presidential hopefuls include J Frank Hanks Eugene Foxe and William Sulzer with Sulzer a close second in a party straw vote.

Four Marines were injured and transported to hospital after the naval collier incident. Officials reported no fatalities as survivors safely landed in Charleston, clarifying the crew’s status and ongoing recovery efforts.
Fifteen hundred men aboard the Hig naval collier Hector were rescued after it broke in two off Cape ROMaine. The Wellington and Cypress saved all crew including four seriously injured. Captain Newell remained with twenty men on board until last. No fatalities, four wounded.

A vessel attempting to reach Charleston harbor grounded amid Friday’s hurricane. Fires erupted aboard while high waves flooded boiler rooms leaving the ship at the mercy of the sea.
War Department reports General Pershing received first official details of a civilian motor expedition into Mexico seeking the bandit Valenzuela who killed William Parker and his bride near Hachita New Mexico on June 27. The pursuit recovered Valenzuela's wife and uncle across the border and returned them to the United States. About twenty Americans plus three Mexicans entered Mexico near Hachita on July 5 in autos reaching San Pedro ranch near Ogitas. No one was seriously harmed. names of Americans remain uncertain.
Attorney reports that a young student from the college will take a period of rest before pursuing his path to manhood. The finding brings relief to the family.
Paul Smith 32 vice president and general sales manager of Chalmers Motor Co Detroit leaped from a tenth floor hotel room window in New York City and was crushed below. His death followed a nervous breakdown after a major deal involving $6,000 0608. He studied at the University of Illinois and worked in several auto firms before joining Chalmers two years ago. Coroner questioned if accidental death, noting a four foot ledge outside the window. No inquest held.
