Illinois guardsmen held in readiness to quell trouble sparked by a strike. Troops prepared to move on short notice amid requests from other states for soldiers.
Chicago July 7 A week into the railway shopmen strike, violence flared in scattered sections as troops prepared in Illinois and the Netherlands and officials rail executives and the labor board maintained firm positions. Jewell disclaimed further responsibility for the walkout and blamed the roads and labor board. Hooper urged following prior steps to end the strike. the labor board said workers should not perform shopmen's duties unless voluntary. Strike bulletin claims 1456 percent perfection and unions support strikers. governors ordered National Guard readiness in Missouri and Indiana to avert disorder.
The strike negotiations between anthracite mine operators and the United Mine Workers adjourned today to resume Monday. Secretary Davis noted slight progress but no final settlement, with President Harding expected to offer views. Wheeler led operators. Phillip Murray spoke for the union in Washington.

William B. Hefferon aged 42 driver of a mobile stage was killed when he lost control on a hill in Yuma Arizona. A passenger escaped by leaping before the vehicle plunged down a cliff into a mesquite tree about 100 feet below. Hefferon formerly lived in Virginia City Nevada and is survived by a sister reportedly county recorder at Tonopah Nevada.
