One officer killed and another fatally wounded after a pitched battle with horse thieves near Folsom. The clash involved the Taft tax plan enforcement and a rustler gang, prompting a large police response.

New York July 2 The misattributed claim to Sir Arthur Stepney is noted as false in the report. The real figure mentioned, Sir Emile Algeron Arthur Keppet Cowell Stepney, is described as a large English landowner with about 10 000 acres and membership in a renowned London club.
The federal grand jury adjourned today and will reconvene July 7 to pursue a further investigation into the American Sugar Refining Company’s affairs.
Amid tense exchanges Senator Aldrich faced remarks from Senator Cheney as he allowed debate on a taxation provision. Santa Fe, Rock Island and Burlington lines probe the Raton coal beds in northern New Mexico to buy the St. Louis Rocky Mountain and Pacific railroad holdings. Engineers survey the fields as officials prepare to inspect the area. A purchase could cost about 20.6 million dollars.
National headquarters of the American Women Suffrage associations planned to relocate to New York City amid pledges of funds and enthusiasm. Vallejo California July 2 Benjamin King a fireman second class mortally burned when a boiler tube burst aboard the destroyer Tull last Tuesday died at Mare Island hospital. He appeared improving this morning and spoke with visitors before suddenly slumping and dying. The other four injured sailors are recovering rapidly.
Washington reports that the US cotton condition averaged 74.6 percent of normal on June 25. The June 25 reading compares with May 26 and a year earlier, with ten year averages around 80.8. Texas and Oklahoma show figures for June 25 and previous dates, indicating regional variations in health and yield prospects.
Paul Sigel, Elsie Sigel's father, identified the recovered Hudson river body as not Leon Ling. A coroner's physician had ruled the remains were a white boy about 16. The district attorney seeks telegraph messages to the Chinese restaurant keeper who found Elsie Sigel.
