In Albuquerque on January 27 1909 Indiana Club members sign a petition urging Senator Beveridge to support New Mexico statehood. The drive seeks 400000 territory residents rights and privileges, with letters and signatures planned to pressure the Indiana senator and local lawmakers.
Washington January 26 The senate committee on immigration approved a favorable report on the nomination of Daniel J Keefe to serve as commissioner general of immigration.

Berlin Jan 26 The Prussian diet rejected electoral reform motions. The national liberal bid for a direct ballot and a secret ballot resolution both failed, while a redistribution plan was also rejected by a large majority.
Morning Journal reports grand jury indictments against three men for town land fraud. Deeds forged in Muskogee include charges tied to Porter and Woodward who have died since the title dispute began. Civil suits seek control of numerous town lots as A Z English and W T Hutchings remain gravely ill.
Today the Lodge passed a bill to prohibit the importation and use of smoking opium. It directs the secretary of the treasury to outline regulations under which opium for medicinal purposes may be brought in.
The Morning Journal reports the Nantucket collision that sank the White Star liner Republic and damaged the Italian liner Florida. Captain Sealby and Wireless Operator Jack Binns are praised for bravery while Florida officers deny fault and claim the Republic ran at high speed through fog.
