The women were murdered by hammer blows and Seeley was drowned after being chloroformed. Ree ley allegedly killed his wife and daughter then died by his own hand amid financial worries. The bodies were discovered by M Smelser and K R Seibbel after weeks of silence. A black cat remained in the basement as detectives searched for weapons.

In Fort Smith Arkansas on January 17 Lee Quinn attempted to free his brother Grant Quinn while handcuffed to a policeman. Kim Burgess fired on them and Quinn jumped from the train escaping. Irn Hrassfield was fatally wounded. Burgess remained uninjured and back in custody.
