Thousand delegates gathered in Pocatello Idaho for the opening session of the national association meeting as sheepmen convene to discuss industry issues and policy directions.
One thousand sheep men attend the National Wool Growers convention in Pocatello Idaho where President Fred W. Gooding assails federal forests and reclamation service. He urges Congress to appoint western investigators to study rules and operations. Delegates from western states attend as talks reference Gifford Pinchot and land control issues. Denver Ogden and Albuquerque vie for the 1910 meeting.
Washington January 14 The American forestry association today elected officers led by President Former Governor Curtis Guild of Massachusetts succeeding James Wilson. Vice presidents named include Andrew Carnegie James Hil W F Finley David R K Francis George T Oliver Charles W Elliot Charles P Taft Dr Weir Mitchell George Foster Peabody Andrew D White Dr Albert Shaw Pardee Ransdell Van Hise Rothrock Purgeson and Dr Edward Everett Hale. The group endorsed non interference in politics and urged forestry education bill passage and various measures to fund forest lands and protect watersheds.
Washington January 4. After years of vain effort to gain compensation for the loss of her kingdom Liuokalani former queen of Hawaii appeared in person before the house committee seeking restitution for her exiled realm.
The queen claims royal lands were wrested from her with American marine aid and asserts a life interest independent of the throne. She consented to a complete settlement offer of 250000 dollars while unable to address the committee, signaling approval through nods toJudge Hateh.
Chicago report states Alphonse and Eva Dufour, indicted in government white slave cases, forfeited $25,000 bail and fled to France where they were sentenced to prison for harboring an American girl. Alphonse five years, Eva two years.
United States Attorney General Charles G Bonaparte asks Circuit Judge A N Kepoikai of Maui to resign after Governor Frear accused the jurist of borrowing $1 000 from a ward of the court. The ward was a Japanese minor whose guardian converted $2 500 of the estate to cash. Kepoikai allegedly borrowed the money. He has since repaid the amount with interest.
St. Petersburg Jan 14 Vice Admiral Rojestvensky died of heart neuralgia at about 60. A seasoned naval leader he rose from artillery academy to head naval intelligence and later commanded the Baltic fleet bound for Vladivostok in 1904. The voyage included the Dogger Bank incident and heavy casualties in the Korea Strait clash with Japan.
Fire roared through the four story Copeland hotel in Topeka ripping through walls and stairs. Isaac F Lambert of Emporia was found dead among the ruins. Fourteen guests and several prominent politicians were injured, many leaping from windows to escape. The blaze started from a defective electric motor wire and the hotel was a total loss valued at 120000 dollars.
Heirs of George Washington appeared before the House Committee on Claims to urge a $365,100 reimbursement for 2000 acres along the Little Miami river in Ohio. The land was granted to Washington but later lost to conflicting federal grants.
In Danville on January 14 Porter Polston, 22, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his mother in law Mrs. Julia Brown. The victim was robbed and her body was dumped into a pond.
John S. Beaven, former Bernalillo county treasurer, turned over county funds to Edward Pinney and retained four percent commissions instead of the two percent allowed under a 1907 act. He withholds totaled about $17,900 for 1907–1909, with about $104,000 still in the treasurer’s hands. A legal action is expected to recover the excess, reflecting the act reducing county salaries to two percent in Class A counties.
