The first violent death in Las Vegas this year involved Curtos Lucero who fell from a tree after a limb broke while trimming trees. He suffered fatal neck and back injuries and was survived by his wife and brother Charles.

London January 7 Major Winston Spencer Churchill former first lord of the admiralty who resigned his cabinet post and went to the front with his regiment has been appointed by command a battalion of Royal Fusiliers at the front in France. Reuter's correspondent says this will be a stepping stone to command a brigade which is Churchill's immediate ambition.
Mrs Bueswell Sage announced in Troy that a branch of Emma Willard School will open as the Russell Sage School of Practical Art for young women. She provides $250000 for maintenance to fund the new department on the former Troy Female Seminary site.
In Silver City New Mexico Villanueva aged 16 mortally wounded at 5 PM by Pete Montes aged 14. Montes rode up fired twice then surrendered at the county jail saying he shot a girl who refused his marriage. Both families well known in town.
Secretary Redfield states in a memorandum to President Wilson that the nation stands at the height of prosperity but warns wartime commerce inflation will fade after the war. He urges disciplined business foresight, continued efficiency in railways and factories, and reliance on a mobilized financial system to sustain trade, investment, and growth as peace orders replace wartime demand.
Washington January 7 a commerce department inquiry into the world's sugar industry by the bureau of foreign and domestic commerce aims to produce the most complete report to Congress on sugar production. Field work begins with investigators sailing from Hawaii to Cuba and gathering data on trade, production, tariffs, and methods.
Kerman, scheduled for execution in Phoenix for the murder of J. B. Harrell, a former Los Angeles bank clerk, received a reprieve until March 6. Juan J Edward Weller was held by the coroner to await grand jury action on murder charges in the death of former business associate Daniel J McNichol. McNichol's body was found buried in a trunk in the cellar of an abandoned building once used by Keller McNichol. The inquest ruled the death was caused by a bullet to the brain after his disappearance on March 30 1914. The body was discovered December 15 1915 during cellar work. Keller McNichol, tied to the site, has been held awaiting coroner action.
The court denied a motion to rearrange the appeal of Hans Schmidt the New York priest. Schmidt is convicted of murdering Anna Ay Müller and sentenced to die in the Sing Sing electric chair next week.
