Muskogee Oklahoma January reports William M. Ragsdale a wealthy undertaker and prominent local figure was shot and killed while escaping during transport to Sapulpa on a murder charge tied to an earlier killing of a policeman and injuries to four others. Ragsdale had been secretly moved from the Muskogee jail to prevent public notice of the arrest. He jumped from the car at Beggs in Okmulgee County and was fatally shot by a Sapulpa officer.
Evelyn Nesbit former wife of Harry K Thaw and central figure in the Madison Square Garden case is critically ill in a private Atlantic City hospital with influenza. She was moved there after a severe cold during boardwalk cabaret duties on New Year's Eve and the following night. Only her 12 year old son Russell Thaw may visit.
The British freighter Canadian Importer, long overdue and feared lost, arrived in Havana from Vancouver after 109 days at sea with 14 000 sacks of rice. She reported heavy weather en route from Gibraltar to Saigon Cochin China.
Washington January 6 President Harding offered Franklin D Hoover the interior secretaryship to replace Albert B Fall who plans to leave March 4 but after a conference Hoover will remain as secretary of commerce. He argues the commerce post is vital for wartime economic recovery and continued departmental reforms.
Rosewood Florida January six state authorities report new grave in Sumner negro cemetery where James Carrier was shot by several white men after a race clash. Carrier allegedly hid in a house site of a white girl attack and was executed after refusing to name other shooters.
Santa Fe January 6 John B Mc Manus formally assumed the chair as superintendent of the state penitentiary today He has not yet announced who his deputy will be.
Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson said he would abandon polar exploration to promote commercial aviation routes across the Arctic within a generation. He argued the north’s lands, once feared as uninhabitable, would become sources of vast resources and settlement as air routes shrink distances between Europe and Asia.
Victoria B C January 6 reports from S C Westwick of Spring House say men digging for drinking water in the Caribou district struck gold bearing sands. They found fine nuggets and sand from shovels, with sands extending over a large area. Most men have staked claims and a wild rush for licenses ensued.
Major J. H. Tolouse of Albuquerque arrived in Santa Fe and announced his active candidacy for the adjutant general post. Other contenders include Harry T. Herring, the current adjutant general under Governor McDonald, and Representative Edgar Puryear, a World War veteran.
William G. McAdoo former secretary of the treasury and federal director of railways with his wife traveled through Albuquerque en route to New York and Washington. He declined to discuss Europe’s reparations crisis or possible US participation in a conference saying he would express views later. The couple noted his health was good and he dismissed a Kansas illness report.
Lorenzo Sandoval faced a forgery charge in Bernalillo District Court and was jailed as other inmates vanished nightly from the secure cell. Sheriff Montoya, after repeated escapes, found the culprit when a tin spoon handled by Sandoval revealed a hidden notched blade used to pick locks.

Three wagon loads of police were called to quell a riot as prohibition agents raided the saloon of Thomas Peak in central Philadelphia. About 206 men were in the establishment when the raid occurred.
