A mysterious applicant for a loan causes a deadly explosion at a crowded Philadelphia bank. Debris, smoke, and chaos erupt as victims are attended by responders. Investigators pursue leads while the city reels from the attack.
A bomb tossed at the Fourth Street National Bank exploded causing two deaths and many injuries. The attacker demanded a $36 000 loan with collateral. a messenger and bank staff were among the wounded. Authorities search for the bomber as panic and debris spread through the wrecked interior and surrounding streets.
Investigators pursue possible accomplices after a bank explosion. A coroner's deputy locates a two inch metal fragment and a badge with a M. W. of A emblem and a hammer motif. The bank plans to resume Monday as cleanup begins and the dead cashier from St. Davids is mourned by his wife and three children.
The Steele family of 1770 North Asland Avenue Chicago learns of a Philadelphia bank bombing involving Rolla Steele who remains alive per telegram. Irene Steele, his widow, says no prior signs of insanity appeared and she has not been told if he is dead.
Maybelle Gillman plans to marry William Hillis Corey of the United States Brew in Paris. Charles H. Gillman, her father, says he will travel with his daughters Peart and Kanlee to witness the wedding next week. The Gillman family residence is listed as 243 Leake Street in the city.
Former Caverner Alva J Adams of Culorady will address Oklahoma delegates on the proposed initiative and referendum plank. Forty delegates paused to urge adoption of the plank at a democratic gathering. President Murray introduced a non partisan state board of health plank during the session. A separate note reports a woman in Denver died by suicide after quarrel with her husband, related to the Conger family.
The Ninth and Tenth cavalry and Twenty-fourth infantry including all colored troops are ordered to prepare for service in the Philippines with sailings between March 5 and June 5. Other units named include the Sixth cavalry and the Eighteenth Twenty-sixth Twenty-ninth and Thirtieth infantry. The department defends equal foreign service policy and notes the Twenty-fourth has served there satisfactorily.
A giant powder and shot bomb dropped from an elevated train at Second Avenue and Forty-second Street injures three seriously in New York. Salvatore Ciniluca and Mrs. Batley are among the wounded. the bomber escapes as witnesses name motives and suspects.
A seven member committee from the National Reciprocal Demurrage convention plans to meet President Roosevelt in Washington on January 15 to urge a law for reciprocal demurrage to ease the national car shortage. They warn that Northwest lumber interests may seek receiverships for Northern Pacific and Great Northern to press claims exceeding 15 million dollars.
San Francisco Jan 5 Judge Hosmer rules that earthquake clauses cover damage from the quake and from fires caused by it. In Walters v Williamsburg City Fire Insurance Co the decision upholds the policy clause and places the burden on the insurer to prove the fire was caused by the earthquake. If upheld, the company may avoid payment where the quake prompted the fire that destroyed the property.
Malt Lake City, Viah.dan George PB Hoover the Washington attorney retained in Mrs Anna M Bradley's defense departed for Washington evening. He secured material to be used in defense relating to a 1905 statement by Arthur Brown acknowledging paternity of one of Bradley's children. Also notes Brown disowned the children in a later will. Prohibitionist Dr Stephen W Lowers dies in Los Angeles at 75 after fifteen years on the Pacific coast.
Washington special reports the Interstate Commerce Commission adjourned its Terra Cotta wreck inquiry to January 14. Witnesses Brigadier Hilderbrand and Telegraph Operator Philipps testified blurred signals and missed black light cues may have contributed to the collision and questioned railway practices at Baltimore and Ohio and Southern lines.

Capitalized at 6000 Ge the project lists P M Dunn Bart G Neville H W Pentroest Lee Pentrorst and W D McGinley among directors. Route includes Chicago Moline St Louis Jefferson City Sedalia Kansas City Independence St Joseph Des Moines Council Bluffs Omaha Lincoln Superior Pueblo Colorado Springs Denver with termini in Chicago and Denver.
Washington January 3 Coroner's jury inquiry into Terre Cote wreck on the Baltimore and Ohio railroad nears a direct issue between a Silver Springs black operator and the crews of passenger train No 66 and freight No 2220 The operator says he gave both trains a clear block at Takoma while trainmen claim both trains received double green signals indicating Takoma was closed for the day and a train might be misusing the switches at Terra Catus or University
Reports from Guthrie Oklahoma indicate bids are opened for land in the Big Pasture or Pig Pasture area within the Comanche and Ute reservations. Clerks work shift schedules and transmit bid records to Washington to speed processing as results await publication.
Real estate circles report Senator W A Clark of Montana purchased Vermeejo Park near Trinidad New Mexico from Willan H Bartlett of Chicago. The 260000 acre tract sits fifty miles west of Trinidad. Sale price reportedly around two million dollars.
The Examiner notes that the Sullivan Trust Company of Goldfield Nevada is financially embarrassed. Drafts on the company held by San Francisco brokers have been protested. Treasurer Peter Grant in San Francisco says the embarrassment is temporary. The firm recently promoted mining stocks nationwide and is alleged to have bought and sold its own securities to stimulate the market, leading to failed drafts.
