The new Parcels Post system begins at midnight as 1913 opens with a Washington City ceremony led by the Postmaster General. The first minute of the year marks the launch of postal packages service nationwide.
The Morning Journal reports Postmaster General Hitchcock opened the parcels post service with the first official package a silver loving cup for engraving and museum preservation. The item traveled from Washington to New York as a ceremonial start to the federal parcels system.
