Crowds of up to 30 000 converge on Sand Cave in Kentucky as rescue teams push a tunnel toward Floyd Collins. Radio tests claim to indicate Collins alive and burning neck wounds persist while workers and relatives maintain cautious optimism amid massive public interest.
Santa Fe Feb 8 Justiniano Baca state land commissioner of New Mexico died suddenly at his home here at 9 o clock tonight. He had just returned from Albuquerque and shortly after complained of feeling ill. Heart failure is believed the cause. He leaves a widow and five children. Born in New Mexico he lived much of his life in Socorro county and Magdalena where he ran a business. He had served as US commissioner and asessor in territorial days and was a lifelong Democrat. He was elected state land commissioner in 1922 and reelected two years later. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
Workers deepen the Sand Cave shaft at a rate of one foot every three hours as timbering and skilled cribmen shortages slow progress. Fresh miners are lowered in, while blasts and a magnetic compass survey test the site. University of Kentucky geologist J W D Funkhouser confirms the original survey accuracy.

Ely Nevada February 8 G G Boreman a 58 year old attorney shot and killed Lester Daage 25 local barber when Daage allegedly tried to force entrance into Boreman residence late last night. Police were told Daage had been drinking and had threatened Boreman earlier over attentions to his wife.
