A powerful storm snarled travel as slides and accidents blocked railroads across the northwest region. Several routes were halted, trains stranded, and authorities urged motorists to avoid affected corridors as crews worked to clear debris and restore service.
Severe winds and eleven foot snow drifts hamper the Great Northern and Northern Pacific lines. An explosion in a rotary snow boiler damaged a locomotive and injured five men, two critically. Crews battles with blocked trestles as trains resume service toward Seattle.
Milensburg Washington reports that the Chicago Milwaukee and Puget Sound eastbound fast grain train Dee was stalled by a drift west of LaCona. An avalanche swept the mountain, wrecking two locomotives and smashing twelve cars with imports while burying twenty three more cars under snow. Roadmaster Hlunt was trapped and severely injured.
