The secretary of state proposes an independent commission to address Europe's three main crises. The plan aims to coordinate relief, diplomacy, and economic strategies to stabilize the continent.
Secretary Hughes urged forming an independent commission of capable Americans to address Europe’s economic crisis, independent of foreign or political influence. He argued reparations remain central, warned against force, and defended the Washington naval treaty while backing reasonable cooperation with other nations.
White House circles said the proposed advisory commission on German reparations could be composed of American financiers appointed by the government if Secretary Hughes’ plan is adopted. The body would be nonbinding and would discuss the amount Germany could pay and should pay.

The convicted are Joseph Rint Rocchio Giglio Andrew Lamantia Rosario Leona and Natale Deamore. They killed Dallas Calmes a restaurant proprietor of Independence Louisiana.
August Haupt president of the Japan Silk Company of New York died in Yokohama after a period of insomnia. The report notes his long involvement in silk trade and leadership of the firm.
Peggy Buston was arrested near Los Angeles on December 6 and brought to the sheriff's office for lengthy questioning about the escape of Clara Phillips from Los Angeles County Jail. Officers said she would stay in the county jail overnight.
Santa Fe appoints Helen R B Fenton of Columbia to head the divisions of child hygiene and public health welfare nursing in the state bureau, succeeding Margaret Tupper who resigns to pursue training at Columbia University. Fenton is Massachusetts General Hospital trained and currently Red Cross district supervising nurse.

William J. Lemp Sr president of the William J. Lemp Brewery shot himself twice through the heart in his office in St Louis. The Lemp family had a history of self-inflicted deaths from the brewing empire once valued at 7.9 million dollars. The suicide follows months of nervous strain as the firm neared auction sales of its 14 acre southern city tract.
New York officials said Martin F. Kern and Joseph F. Guffey pleaded not guilty to federal indictments. Kern faces perjury charges for passport sworn citizenship claims. Guffey is charged with embezzling 406000 in government funds. Hearing set for January 8. both released on bond.

Wheat, corn, and oats crops exceeded prior year totals, cotton consumption up, and wool manufacturing more active.

About twenty five highway workers occupy the senate chamber while public health and education offices use representative halls. Delays from a railroad strike push occupancy sixty days late. most moves should occur by mid January with all departments in new quarters soon after.
Reports that Ambassador Warren planned to resign as ambassador to Japan circulated. A White House spokesman said President Harding had not received a resignation and noted Warren had helped cement Japan United States relations and would retire at his pleasure if he wished. Warren’s Detroit residence underscores his law practice background.
The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company steamer Chaudiere ran onto rocks off Bermuda while sailing from West Indian ports to Nova Scotia. The ship was badly damaged but refloated with no loss of life.

A federal grand jury indicted 13 men including four La Montagne brothers after a probe into a bachelor dinner at the Racquet and Tennis club on Park Avenue. The cases allege conspiracy to violate the Volstead act with about 30,000 gallons of liquor sold to exclusive clubs and homes, plus forged permits. Other defendants include officers of La Montagne Sons and Eminence Distillery, with accomplices in distribution to Newark Long Branch and Asbury Park drug stores.

In Yuma Arizona December 25 Judge Fred Ingraham postponed the sentence for Alva E Smith found guilty last week of embezzling 6000 dollars from Valley Bank Parker Arizona. The delay follows defense and prosecution agreement. Smith’s second trial on a 4000 dollar embezzlement count is postponed to January.
