One hundred fifty thousand workers in the city’s men’s clothing trade are ordered on strike tomorrow by the United Garment Workers local executive committee. Four thousand shops may be affected as 1000 pickets will target violators. Demands include a 20 percent wage rise, minimums of 10 for women and 16 for men, overtime at time and a half, and cleaner, safer workshops.
A Montana embezzlement suspect known as Thomas A. Prout, using the alias FE Chapman, says a prison term is preferable to the suspense of pursuit. Panama announces Colonel Goethals, U. S. A. chief engineer, will serve as civil governor of the canal zone. Sunday crowd on Venice Pier panicked as a speeding auto jumped the curb. The incident left a high number of spectators injured and a driver fatally hurt.
Hal Shain, famed Pacific coast racer, died after his cup shaped track car plunged into the crowd at Venice. Three others were seriously injured including Mrs. A. T. Atkinson and M. W. J. Johnson while J. M. Moyer suffered abdominal injuries. Shain, 88, known as Hal, died in Santa Monica hospital after the crash that sent spectators scrambling.
Denver report states Benjamin F. Montgomery lieutenant governor elect of Colorado died at St Luke's hospital after a three week illness from post operative complications He was 75 a Mansfield Ohio native who moved to Colorado early and served in state legislation He leaves one son William F Montgomery a rancher of Meeker Colorado and was a prominent Democratic figure at the time of his election.
Washington reports a winter farewell dinner for Congressman Cannon will feature a memorial gift valued around 2000 dollars. A house subscription last session raised ten dollars from contributors. the form may be an oil portrait or marble bust. The nonpartisan event at the Willard Hotel ballroom will include prominent figures from both parties.

In Chicago on December 29 a Sunday school class of two hundred children sang Onward Christian Soldiers as they escaped a blaze at the Lorimer Memorial Baptist church. Organist Mrs Elmer Anderson and teacher Miss Martha Marquardt led the evacuation before flames consumed the basement and reached the worship area. A mounted policeman alerted the teachers after spotting smoke through a window. The two teachers fled, abandoning coats and furs, as the building went up in flames.
Dorothy Beason 21 of Williams Arizona rode a horse from Chicago toward the west to escape hunger. She rode Tuesday until halted near Dwight Illinois where she was captured and returned to face horse stealing charges. She admitted the act saying she meant to return the horse. She claimed to be a rider seeking work in a wild west show or circus.
Colorado's nineteenth general assembly will convene January 1 to consider conservation and highway legislation. The body will be 73 Democrats, 25 Republicans, two Progressives. Governors Shafroth and Thomas are the likely U S senators. The new assembly backs progressive planks, focusing on water, mineral, forest and agricultural resource control, with harmony expected with Governor-elect Ammons.
Salt Lake City Dec 28 The tenth Utah legislature will convene Jan 18 with 47 Republicans and 16 Democrats. Plans include ratifying the federal income tax amendment, direct election of US senators, revising election laws, banning voting machines, new revenue law for property valuation, mothers pension law, direct primary law, public utilities commission, and anti race track bills. Utah will not elect a US senator this session.
