Russian forces seize the city of Tabriz after nine days of heavy bombardment and fierce fighting, following Persian capitulation as czarist troops tighten hold in the region.
A nine day siege by Russian troops results in the occupation of Tabriz Persia and the dispersion of Fidais fighters. Heavy casualties on both sides including Russian losses, damage to property, and the American flag at the U S consulate shot down but not further harmed.
Washington reports the treasury department capped non duty import from Canada of wood pulp and paper from Ontario Indian lands. Future pulp or paper from these woods must pay duty due to Canadian export restrictions aligning Ontario lands with crown lands.
Ex Governor Malcolm R Patterson of Tennessee departed for home via Chicago with his 28 year old son Malcolm R Patterson Jr who shot B R Seal at Fort Orchard on December 7 and was pronounced insane after expert examination. The son will be placed in the Tennessee state asylum under his father’s custody.
New Orleans dispatch reports Detective William J Burns confirming further arrests in the nationwide dynamite conspiracy case He says executive board members of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Iron Workers who funded the McNamaras are as guilty as the brothers and that authorities will pursue those higher up amid investigations of an explosion that damaged a non union built structure last year.
General Bernardo Reyes, who surrendered and confessed failure to spark another Mexican revolution, appeared before the military court in Mexico City. He was confined in Santiago prison for seventy two hours of solitary confinement following the proceeding, with the hearing not open to the public.
A Puebla dispatch reports General Miquelis with 1000 federal troops sent to quell Zapatistas in Puebla. Another 1000 men from Chihuahua are ordered to Morelos to counter Zapatistas there. The moves follow General Reyes surrender and aim to end the rebellion within three weeks.
Drifting snow and freezing temperatures grip western Kansas with stock suffering and railroad disruption. Trains on the Great Mead Beatt City branch faced three days of snowbound tracks, drifts over five feet high before clearance today. Union Pacific lines report heavy drifting as Wichita braces for a severe storm with falling temperatures and sleet.

Nine Peoria citizens were ordered to appear in Indianapolis on January 4 to testify about the blowups of the Peoria and Pekin Union bridge and the Lucas Tron Works. The witnesses, including railroad men, toll keepers, watchmen, police, a chambermaid, and a farmer and family, are linked to the McNamaras and Ortie McManigal. Their testimony aims to aid a wide government dynamite investigation.

In a 12 hour blizzard search near Fowler Kansas, farmer W D Nifton found his wife dead in a snow bank. She taught a rural school and left in a buggy to reach home yesterday. Her five year old son clung to her breast, partially shielded by her body, and may survive.
St Louis dispatch reports running ice in the Mississippi River today interfering slightly with ferry boats. Weather Forecaster Hayes says there is no great danger to navigation. The Weather Bureau notes ice in the Missouri and Mississippi rivers west and north of St Louis but does not indicate serious obstruction to navigation.
Turkish forces defeated Italian troops after a full day and night battle near Tobruk Tripoli. TheTurkish report says the garrison was annihilated, supplies and a quick firing gun were captured, and half of the enemy were killed during retreat to the coast. Seven Turkish soldiers died and Lt Nadjib Bey led the assault.
Chicago December 29 direct evidence that a packers pool operated from 1893 to 1896 and resumed control of the fresh meat business after a two year suspension was given by Henry Veeder who testified as secretary of the organization The pool met weekly at the Counselmen building to fix beef prices allot meat and share markets among Armour Cudahy Swift and others including Schwaragchild and Sulsberger The court allowed detailed questioning on the pool operations during Veeder s testimony
Boston reports active prep for the January 15 trial of Rev Clarence V. T. Richeson for the Avis Linnell murder. Defense says mental condition may delay trial. district attorney confirms no plea deal and cites possible first degree murder plea. A Cambridge druggist levitan testified about cyanide sales tied to the case.
Judge Porterfield of the criminal court today refused to sign a bill of exceptions prepared by Dr. B. Clark Hyde's attorneys. The indictment alleges murder of Colonel Thomas H. Swope and cites Hyde's mistrial claim as basis. The bill lacked complete proceedings and failed to detail juror Harry Waldron's escape and daily adjournments.
