From St Petersburg to Northport and Santo Domingo the day’s dispatches cover upheaval. A widow testifies to Simpson threats over a will in New York while accounts claim revolutionary agitators push a Jew massacre hoax. Uprisings in Moscow crumble and authorities muster control amid unrest.
New York on December 29 reports District Attorney Jerome stating gambling houses and pool rooms in the city are as wide open as ever. He accused political leaders of patronage ties to employes in these venues. Several defendants pled guilty to bookmaking and faced $100 fines, with backers liable if offenders could not pay.
New York December 29 Mme Lillian Nordica received hearty applause after calmly stamping out a stage fire during Gotterdammerung at the Metropolitan Opera House. The blaze started from a torch carried by a chorus girl and burned carpet near the footlights as the fire scene unfolded in the final act. Nordica continued singing without interruption.
In St Louis on December 23 two general committees reached a basis for merging the Northern Presbyterian U S A and the Cumberland Presbyterian churches. Ratification by their assemblies in Des Moines and Decatur is planned for May 17, 1906, final union to be announced thereafter.
Moscow reports electric light service back by 4 o clock. Streets return to normal as schedules resume with railroads expected to follow shortly. Martial law was proclaimed in response to unrest involving Heindheff and Southward Hussla n.
A bomb exploded at a workers meeting in Dvinek West Russie killing eight and wounding twenty eight as authorities proclaimed martial law after a strike.
Dispatch notes that hardship alters social ties from Monte Carlo to Europe in the Herald European edition. The proverb about adversity creating strange bedfellows is cited as applying to gambling circles, with the note continued on Page 2, Column.
Mayor Mc Clellan announces Brigadier General Theodore A. Bingham A S A retired as police commissioner succeeding William McAdoo. Bingham, not aligned with parties, considers the offer and will answer soon. Quackery topics also noted in a Paris antithquackery congress plan.
Rome dispatch: Vatican officials report protests from several American bishops over the Pope’s audiences to Americans. An American woman who had been divorced was presented, angering the Pontiff. Future American applications must be bishop recommended or officially backed.
New York reports the adjournment of the legislative committee or insurance investigation ends the examination of old line companies. The next day features exhibition presentations not read for the record and identification. Stokes of Manhattan Life testified as United States Life Insurance was finished, Life Insurance club of New York discussed. Baron Komura departs from Manchuria after treaty with China. He donates funds to Chinese schools and clubs before leaving for Tokyo.
William Murphy, 31, son of Jeremiah Murphy wealthy pork packer, is held on a charge of stabbing his friend David Leahy in an early morning incident. Leahy, reported stabbed and resisting highwaymen, is said to be mortally wounded. Leahy refuses to discuss the event.
Charles J. Yerkes noted railway financier of Chicago and London dies at the Waldorf Astoria after six weeks of illness due to a complex of diseases. Family members present, banker Speyer & Co. notes his work on the London underground and urges continued management of his projects.
At 2 oclock in the morning two masked men armed with revolvers entered Con O Shea's saloon in Lowell Arizona and took 75 from the cash drawer. The proprietors and staff were frightened and no one has been located or arrested yet.
Helena Morgan defeats the famed Billings in a sensational three year old pacer race after Billings wins heat one and falters in heat four. Time results include 2:11 1-4 and 2:44 1-2 as Barnett profits from the event with others including Hinney and Baralmos brothers also racing. Phoenix hosts the trots with George the Phoenix horse and Fannie the Flagstaff mare winning minor events.
At a Manila banquet for W. J. Bryan the audience urged immediate independence for the Philippines and sought Bryan as their champion with the American people. Bryan promised new concessions, disappointing Aguinaldo and others present. Americans in New York noted Bryan’s cautious stance.
