Nordica Extinguishes Stage Fire at Met Opera

New York December 29 Mme Lillian Nordica received hearty applause after calmly stamping out a stage fire during Gotterdammerung at the Metropolitan Opera House. The blaze started from a torch carried by a chorus girl and burned carpet near the footlights as the fire scene unfolded in the final act. Nordica continued singing without interruption.

Presbyterian Bodies Fuse United Churches in Joint Sessions

In St Louis on December 23 two general committees reached a basis for merging the Northern Presbyterian U S A and the Cumberland Presbyterian churches. Ratification by their assemblies in Des Moines and Decatur is planned for May 17, 1906, final union to be announced thereafter.
