Train collision near Richmond kills five and wounds two

Multiple train wrecks report in December 26 dispatches. The Chesapeake & Ohio collision between an westbound express from Richmond and a freight resulted in five deaths and two injuries. Passengers were jolted as engines and cars were badly wrecked.

Massachusetts man shoots two children amid jealousy

Springfield Mass December reports a man Montgomery shot his two children in Packardville after his wife refused to live with him. He killed George and wounded Eva before being restrained by her father and jailed.

Representative Payson Eyes Forfeiture of Unearned Lands

In Washington on December 26 Representative Payson of the House Judiciary Committee pushed details on lapsed land grants. He found the Oregon Central road holds over 1,500,000 acres from Portland to Astoria and seeks to open it to settlement under the homestead law. A resolution for forfeiture may reach the committee at the next meeting.

Attempt to wreck 5 oclock New York train thwarted

An attack aimed at wrecking the 5 oclock New York train two miles from town failed when a tie was placed on the track causing the engine to halt suddenly. The accompanying limited express for Boston followed shortly after, with no injuries or damage reported.
