President elect Wilson is confined to bed with a slight influenza attack. He spent most of the day resting to recover from overwork and exposure, canceling engagements to regain strength.
Princeton dispatch reports Wilton Wilson spent Christmas in bed with grippe symptoms after a cold and car ride. He improved overnight and will travel to Staunton Virginia, his birthplace, on December 28 for a family birthday celebration. Secret service and press crews shelter nearby.
Staunton Virginia readies a royal welcoming for Woodrow Wilson with bonfires and torchlight processions. Gov Mann and federal and state officials join a weekend parade and public receptions at Mary Baldwin Seminary and the Presbyterian Church where Wilson was born.

The French steamship Salazie was driven onto a reef about forty miles off the southwest coast of Madagascar during a cyclone on November 29. 145 passengers survived after all but two life boats failed and a second officer died during rescue efforts. Passengers landed on a desert island where camps were set up before two boats returned to Madagascar to fetch them.
In San Bernardino California a man who gave the name Hitchcock had a diamond weighing about one carat cut from his flesh under his arm by a surgeon. He said the gem was sewn in during a trip to South Africa as a Christmas gift for his wife and refused to explain further. Also reported, Stamford actress Margaret Hatch died of heart failure at age forty after collapsing during a vaudeville performance.
More than two hundred patients were admitted to Atlanta hospitals today following Christmas celebrations marked by fireworks and pistol use.

Steve Perkins, a wood chopper from Alpine district, received a parchment directing him to dig at a spot where a dead redwood’s shadow falls at sunset. Following the clue, he found a $500 reward. The note, dated San Francisco, purportedly came from Nathan Comstock, an eccentric Woodside resident who died sixteen years ago. Perkins had previously saved Comstock’s life twenty years earlier.
