Grief sweeps Chicago as the city mourns brave firemen who died in the Packing House disaster. Officials declare a day of mourning with ceremonies and public tributes to the fallen heroes.
Chicago mourns after a Morrin & Co beef house fire kills Chief Horan and 24 firefighters. Flags at half mast, eight burials held, with Captain Doyle and son buried together. Edward Morris pledges 25,000 to the Citizens Relief fund for widows and orphans.
Portland on December 24 reports a 50 year old woman, M Kivu Baker, severely burned while playing Santa Claus. Her clothing caught fire from candles and rescue teams fought to save her with great difficulty.
Beatie Wagsh. reports a fire at Daniel O'Conner's residence started by a lamp causing a lamp explosion. Bert six months and Donald three years died. Four others injured including Mr and Mrs O Conner, Owen Peterson, Mrs W Conner's brother Kedaw, and Patrolman Scott White while attempting to rescue the children.
A Christmas wreath hung on a chandelier in a Toronto home swung free from a chandelier when a wind opened the lock corroding the air and suffocating Mrs Edward May Simpson. Mrs Simpson had arrived from Toronto the week before to visit her daughter Mrs Edward Tilley.
Alexander Skibinaki, a Russian violinist and professor at Shorter College, suffered severe hand injuries after a firework exploded in a store. He lost three fingers and his colleague Mire Shitinski was momentarily deaf from the blast.
Indianapolis scene of a fatal house fire as J W H Kellemeyer dies attempting to rescue his wife trapped on a second floor. The wife escapes by leaping from the window after tossing clothes to signal, while the home is burned down and five children sleep inside.
J B Cook a prominent California hotelier and Yosemite postmaster killed himself in an upper room of the Sentinel hotel during a house party. He left no note and offered no reason. His wife and daughter were removed from the scene in panic. In another item a fire in Bryan Texas killed six month old twin babies in bed after the blaze prevented rescue. The home and contents were destroyed. In New England, an inch and a half of rain ends a drought feared to threaten water supplies. churches offered thanks for the rain as a Christmas gift.
In Covington Kentucky a Christmas gathering for William Gardner II two years old ended in tragedy when the child was found dead in bed under covers as Santa arrives. He was visiting relatives from Somerset and the Gardner family planned a gift presentation at Frank Gardner’s home. Coroner’s verdict pending, authorities believe accidental smothering may be cause.
Washington notes a quiet Christmas at the White House with Provident and Mrs Taft at home. The president attended All Souls Unitarian Church alone, Mrs Taft with Helen Taft at St John’s Episcopal Church. A few friends visited in the afternoon as official Washington kept to the holiday.
Los Angeles December 25 Llewelyn Iron works partially wrecked by dynamite explosion early this morning. A hole eighteen inches deep and six feet in diameter marks the blast site. The night watchman was slightly injured. Police suspect labor troubles as the motive and continue to search for suspects. J B Asbury was trapped but rescued unharmed except for cuts and scalp abrasion. Company secretary John Llewelyn condemns violence and asserts the plant’s right to operate, while disavowing any link to metal workers’ strike participants.
Fred Wheeler of the Los Angeles Central Labor Council denounces violence linked to local industry conflict. He recalls twenty six years of peaceable efforts and condemns dynamite outrages as harmful to labor causes. City police have no leads as grand jury expected to report on the Times dynamiting case.

Boston obituary reports the death of Adams Sherman Mil professor emeritus of rhetoric and oratory at Harvard University. He died at his home aged 77. Mil authored notable books on rhetoric and oratory.
Admiral George Dewey will be 74 years old tomorrow. He remains in good health and attends his office regularly, with no formal birthday celebrations planned.

A lone bandit robbed over 100 passengers aboard Missouri Pacific train No 112 from Leavenworth Junction to Kansas City. He took watches and money, shot a conductor, and fled at Kansas City Kansas. Passengers William Bickley and M Morrison were among those reporting losses while others turned over small sums and valuables.
Mrs. M A Warner a 72 year old widow who ran a north side boarding house for sixteen years died today in Pittsburgh. She claimed to have fed nearly a million people and gave away many meals to the unemployed.
Pasadena reports that Mrs Adna Cudahy, formerly divorced from Jack Cudahy heir of Michael Cudahy meat packer, has arrived in Pasadena and is living at the Cudahy residence where Jack has stayed since last Wednesday. Authorities say a reconciliation has been effected.
Dr. Frederick A. Cook answers Danish explorer Knud Rasmussen’s charge that he exploited Eskimo boys and faked their statements in support of his Arctic tale. He accuses Rasmussen of leading questions and cites his history with Rasmussen to explain the feud while defending Peary’s role and his own polar achievements.
In Antwerp harbor the steamers Finland and Baltique collided at the river mouth. The Baltique sank with unknown damages. six crewmen survived the Finnish rescue. Five crewmen are missing as the Finland anchors and a pilot boat assists the salvage effort.
North Sea trawlers return home for Christmas without news of Cecil Grace the young aviator who disappeared Thursday while attempting a return flight from Calaty to Dover. Tug crews and a flushing pilot report possible wreckage and aeroplane parts, but searchers hold slim hopes for Grace. Grace's relatives persist in the fruitless search with renewed effort.
John D. Rockefeller sent twenty five dollars in gold to each school teacher in the Tarrytown area for Christmas. Miss Helen Gould distributed gold to the local telephone exchange girls and railroad workers, providing gold pieces and turkeys for her employer.
A weather summary lists conditions for east Washington New Mexico Arizona and West Texas with rain snow and colder spells. Rhode Island’s general assembly convenes January 3 with a strong Republican majority. The eighty seven Republicans and fifty one Democrats will shape policy and the selection of a U.S. Senator Aldrich. Candidates include Judge Le Baron Colt Henry I. Lippett and Judge Arthur L. Brown.
Hartford will inaugurate Simeon Baldwin as the first Democratic governor in eighteen years when the general assembly meets January 4. The Senate and House are Republican, while Baldwin's administration draws interest over a Senate seat race to replace Bulkeley as well as Roosevelt era politics and leadership.
In Wheeling West Virginia the legislature will assemble in January with a Democratic majority on joint ballot to select a new United States senator replacing Republican Nathan E Scott. Early candidates include John T McGraw Clarance W Watson Lawrence Tiernay and Andrew Edmiston as campaigns formed after the landslide results.
