A Christmas holiday return of the ambassador has revived reports that he plans retirement. The chatter centers on imminent changes in the diplomatic post and possible successors, with no official confirmation issued yet.
The late Associate Justice McKenna of the United States Supreme Court began life as a shorthand law reporter and never abandoned the art. He kept track of Supreme Court arguments by shorthand and sometimes wrote opinions in that form, aided by a secretary who could decipher his notes. In Santa Fe a collision near here Thursday night killed Alice and Edna Crawford and their aunt Mrs Clara Pearson. Ben Gregory of Greeley Colorado suffered a punctured lung and a broken rib but was reported Friday night much improved with a chance of survival. Claude Fitze, driver of the car, escaped injury while Miss Crawford sustained only slight injuries. The bodies of the dead were expected to be removed for burial within days.
George J Hassell, 45, farmer of Farwell, Texas, is charged with murdering his wife and eight stepchildren after their bodies were found buried in a cave near his Texico New Mexico area ranch. He stabbed himself during questioning and was taken to a hospital in Clovis New Mexico where doctors said he was dying. Authorities say motive remains unclear and that Hassell had recently sold property proceeds and indicated intent to join relatives in Oklahoma.
Juan B. Sacasa the Liberal faction leader in Nicaragua and his cabinet were ordered by American naval authorities to leave Puerto Cabezas by 4 pm Saturday. Marines from the cruisers Cleveland and Denver reportedly landed and searched his residence, prompting the protest from Sacasa's government.
President Diaz narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Managua as two armed men attacked his presidential carriage after a social function. The driver intervened, keeping Diaz unharmed, while the assailants were restrained.
Governor Hannett said the eight general road contracts scheduled for December 28 would not be let if Charles Springer of the highway commission opposes. He added the present administration does not intend to enter contracts opposed by the next administration and suggested Springer speak for the Republican party on the matter.

Albuquerque residents joined the Alvarado Hotel for a 6 to 8 p m Christmas Eve open house. Guests gathered by the lobby fireplace as carols were performed by Dorothy Cameron, Franks Darrow, Grace Bwortz McCanna, and L J Thompson. A large illuminated tree and festive decor enhanced the holiday mood. Resident Manager Cole and staff mingled with visitors, extending cheerful Christmas wishes.
Clar ence Wylie cashier of the First State Bank of Tel 16 miles southwest of Childress was robbed of $1,500 by a lone thief yesterday afternoon. No other person was in the bank when the robber forced him to surrender cash and currency and then locked him in the vault before fleeing.
Paris dispatch reports former Crown Prince Carol in Neuilly away from home for over thirty hours. Diplomats say he may return to Bucharest to resume Hohenzollern prerogatives, while confidants insist Lupescu is living nearby without him. King Ferdinand reportedly wants his son back in Romania.
Washington reports that the United States has refused to sanction export of airplanes purchased by the Calles government for shipment to Mexico. The Douglas Aircraft Co. near Los Angeles supplied the planes and an export license was denied about ten days ago with no official explanation. President Calles then banned importation of war materials into Mexico for one year, and the embassy question remains unsettled.
President and Mrs. Coolidge joined in Christmas carols at the White House marking a nation wide Yuletide broadcast led by the Central Congregational church choir of Brooklyn. The program featured Marine Band music and an address by Senator Capper, with gifts planned for the presidential family.
In Augusta on December 24 a crowd of about 500 gathered near a Confederate monument as Ty Cobb praised the city and declined political office saying he is a baseball player not a politician He promised to clear himself of charges and defended Tris Speaker calling him an honest player.
Uniontown PA. December 24. Maurice F. Meinert sporting goods dealer bought the Uniontown Baseball Club of the Mid Atlantic league for 25 dollars in cash. He acquired the franchise and other property at a sheriff sale to satisfy a 900 dollar judgment he had against the club. He was the sole bidder.
Swami Shradhanand, noted Hindu leader, was killed by Abdul Rashid a Mohammedan in Delhi. Dharam Singh, the Swami's attendant, was severely injured but restrained the assailant and handed him to police.
Patrick Eugene Mc Dermott was found guilty of first degree murder in Canton Ohio for the death of Don R. Mellett, a crusading editor shot at his garage door July 16. The jury, after about an hour deliberation, recommended mercy and the judge deferred sentencing until after Christmas.
Santa Fe New Mexico reports Thomas Jonas from Eddy County received a full pardon from Governor A T Hannett after a two to three year reform school term. The pardon is the governor's first Christmas clemency. A requisition was issued to Texas for extradition of B Priesman, wanted in La Lana County for obtaining goods under false pretenses.
One complete engine was dispatched by express from Duncan Field to Tampico to replace a disabled Pan American plane. It should arrive by noon Saturday to facilitate a planned flight from Tampico to Vera Cruz, continuing the South tour.
