Judge Wallace delivers a significant statement defending his interpretation of Missouri blue laws as a bulwark of American liberty. The remarks address constitutional limits and the balancing act between religious exemptions and state regulation.
Judge William H. Wallace leads a campaign to enforce Sunday closing under Missouri law. Since September, 1101 indictments have been returned for Sunday law violators, with hundreds of shops closed and over 500 performers and managers bonded for hearings.
Grand jury action led to widespread Sunday closure of retail grocers barbers and most merchants in Kansas City with only a few observing other days. A rare clandestine cigar sale persists and two theaters still defy the law while most pool halls have closed.
New York city promoters resumed Sunday shows with officers monitoring for law violations after Justice O Gorman limited activities. Theaters and high end venues remained closed while penny arcades and some side shows opened with restrictions. Ely Nevada December 22 Rescue team reaches the 1000 foot level of the Alpha shaft aiming to free two entombed miners. Ground down the shaft remains unstable with ongoing cave ins. Miners report they have provisions for three weeks and rope safety measures foreseen as workers brace for further hazards.
Governor Curry and delegation visited Carlsbad to drum up backing for the irrigation congress at Albuquerque. Business leaders pledged unanimous support for statehood and funding, with Pecos valley towns promising to cover congress expenses and assist in Washington. The party plans to depart Carlsbad for Albuquerque at 4 AM Monday.
Opening of the last full week of 1907 shows conservative trading across New England. Trade is expected to improve in 1908 though a full revival is not anticipated until after the presidential election. Boston remains the center for key industries and cotton and woolen mills, with banks weathering the financial strain better than elsewhere.
Secretary Taft holds a formal conference with campaign manager Arthur J. Vorys of Ohio to review political developments while Taft travels. Taft plans to return to Ohio to act as executor for his mother's estate and resume campaign coordination with leaders.
San Francisco reports state banks back to normal after Governor Gi Lett declared holidays to ease stringency. Homer King, president of the clearing house, says the past two weeks saw normal banking activity with gold plentiful on demand and certificates gradually retired.
Business leaders of Denver organise the Colorado Industrial Lia position to stage an annual inter state fair at Riverside Park. Officials announce plans to spend substantial funds on park improvements creating a major exposition in the region.
A telegram from President Luis Anderson reports Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador support the conference’s amnesty plan for political offenses. Costa Rica and Nicaragua respond affirmatively, while El Salvador reports no amnesty since late November. Also notes Soviet troop movements and Goldfield Nevada unrest with local officials requesting continued federal presence.
In Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania on December 22 rescue teams report only thirty three of more than two hundred miners trapped by the Durr mine blast have been found and brought to surface. Twenty bodies recovered today lie in coffins awaiting burial while others remain unrecovered miles beyond the search zone. Rescuers hold at the swamp heading about a mile from the mouth as entries diverge.
Albert Filley in jail faces a serious family incident at the Canwron home. He says his brother Henry Clay Filley and others attacked him with a club, claiming self defense after his wife and daughter were harmed. He asserts his sister-in-law’s injury led to the confrontation and denies insanity.
Four persons injured and heavy property damage as two wrecks halted three Pennsylvania tracks near Boelivar Pa fifty eight miles east of Pittsburgh. An extra freight derailed from a broken rail and about twenty cars piled on tracks one two and three. The Chicago mail train plowed into debris injuring mail clerks and several passengers. One locomotive was demolished.
The Colorado State banks in Durango and Pagosa Springs and the Shineher City State Bank in Durango have closed and cannot reorganize. Receivers were appointed to wind up affairs as state bank commissioner M Beatty reported after visiting Durango. Total liabilities are about 330000 with 75000 capital stock and assets around 460000, insufficient to meet debts.
Washington reports that telegraphic appeals from civic bodies mine owners and residents of Goldfield Nev urged keeping some federal troops there but no action was decided. Adjutant General Ainsworth said Secretary Taft ordered General Funston to withdraw the troops on December 30.
Morning Journal Special Leased Wire reports Alaska Governor Whophall’s annual interior department submission. He cites population estimates near 1,000 residents plus 7,500 workers in mines and rail projects, outlines prospecting in mill districts, calls for legal code revisions, and notes a steel mill shutdown affecting nearly 3,000 workers with a January resumption expected.
Washington reports naval officials have not decided the return route for the battleship fleet. Admiral Evans and Secretary Metcalf favor sending ships via the Suez Canal next summer or fall, with a possible mix of routes for remaining vessels and some ships kept in the Pacific. Final choice awaits developments over the next six months.
