Cruiser New York to Lead Small Fleet to Isthmian Waters

The New York is to depart with a small squadron toward the Isthmus, heading to Panama to protect supplies for the coalition. The Mare Island yard commander is ordered to draft 250 men from the seceding Fudepen defense to bolster the force at sea. Destroyers Preble and Paul Jones are due to arrive tomorrow and will join the operation.

Murder in the last degree. Durnese to be hanged

Frank H. Durnese 44 admitted killing Townsend and two others over 6.30 and was convicted of murder in the last degree. He said he would speak to the jury and that the only way out is the electric chair. Judge Crave to sentence Monday. Durnese wished them merry Christmas. Foul murder in Deming claims Chinatown merchant

Sham Fong a popular Chinese merchant was found dead in the rear room of his Deming store. He had been gagged and tied, with two head wounds likely from a heavy blade. A coroner's jury ruled death at hands of unknown parties, with robbery not believed to be the motive. He was noted as a Methodist and advocate for Sunday-law enforcement.

Speedy Trial for American Railroad Men

Reports say many American railroad workers in Mexico faced long detention without trial for alleged negligence in wrecks and homicides. After Secretary Hay urged action, Mexico issued a circular prohibiting arrests without strong guilt presumption and ordering speedy proceedings with bail where possible. Ambassador Clayton notes 43 such cases since 1901, 38 disposed of, three of the remaining five released on bail fled the U.S., and only two prosecutions still pending.

Chandler Surrender After Habeas Corpus Dismissal

John E. Chandler wanted in Idaho Springs Colorado for conspiracy in mining property destruction was handed to a Colorado official after a supreme court dismissal of a habeas corpus writ. An alternative writ was secured but the Colorado officer could not be located, as he had already removed Chandler.

Odessi Dec 22 The Sea of Agor recession leaves about a dozen ships of various sizes stranded within three miles of Taganrog. The port faces supply shortages as access remains blocked. Taganrog sits near fertile wheat lands and is a key grain port in south Russia.

Washington December 22 The apostolic delegation reports from Rome that the pope has granted depensation from abstinence on New Year’s Day which falls on Friday. The delegation has mailed circular letters to all bishops informing them of the change.
