A river boat wreck near Vickshore leaves sixteen dead and many injured. Reports describe an explosion on board the steamer and a large rescue effort by local crews. Damaged vessels and smoky ruins mark the scene as authorities investigate the blast.
The Vicksburg Davis Creek trade steamer W. T. Leovil exploded at Gold Dust landing injuring and killing many. White captain John Quackenboss and Wade Quackenboss perish among others. Lavell Verger the only recovered body. As the ship sank hundreds of pounds of cotton seed and cotton were lost. The injured were treated locally and at Vicksburg Sanitarium.
Early reports from New Orleans list 12 dead in the Feevil explosion, four whites and eight blacks. The blast hurled boiler fragments and soil over 200 yards, burying Lavell Verger beneath a log and killing another Black man beneath it.
William Haywood former consul general at Reoul Korea died at the government sanitarium in Fort Bayard New Mexico of pulmonary tuberculosis. He arrived a month ago and his condition was hopeless. Mrs Haywood attended his death and will return to Washington. Sanches governor of Chihuahua named to succeed Creel as ambassador to Washington.
A French court martial held in Little today found Captain Magniese guilty of disobeying orders and sentenced him to dismissal from the army. The proceedings concluded with this ruling after the charges related to failure to follow orders.
In a court scene Captain Magniese proclaimed he is a Christian and would rather be shot than renounce the sacrament. Meanwhile in Minneapolis Wallace Campbell’s five criminal counts were nolled by the county attorney, with other charges against William Bechtel similarly dismissed due to outlawed status. Elmer Barth's bribery case was carried over. In Russia an imperial ukase fixes electoral college dates with parliament to convene March fifth after February elections. Preliminary electoral college elections begin February second.

Four people perished in a fire at the Zenobia apartment building on Pronent Avenue near Wert Haren Street.
