He blamed technicalities red tape and imperfect juries for miscarriages of justice and urged appointment over election of judges. He cited the Thaw case as an example and defended the judiciary against harsh public critiques.
A jury was sworn to try the white wife of Charlie Sing, a Chinese man, for murder in Judge McDonald's court. Mrs. Sing, wearing black, stood beside her husband who lay fatally stabbed in his home as investigators described. Police say two strangers attacked them after a domestic dispute. In Joliet Illinois on December 18 an automatic derailment system saved a Chicago bound express train by diverting a runaway coal train after its air brakes failed. The derailment switch opened and the freight derailed into a ditch, allowing the passenger train to pass. the freight crew survived with minor injuries while the engine and coal unloading caused two workers to be buried but later rescued.
Norfolk Virginia December 18. The navy tugs Hercules and Massasoit left port to rendezvous with the disabled battleship Vermont which is being towed northward by the battleship Delaware along the coast.
A hearing before the state public service commission examined payments and alleged influence by the New York New Haven Hartford railroad. George H. Sargent testified he was paid for a weekly letter to newspapers. John A. Alarby claimed $750 yearly for following legislation. a hotel card game alleged to involve legislators was investigated. Henry E. Bowden declined to answer to avoid self incrimination.
